Alone in the Dark: Unveiling the Release Date, Trailers, Gameplay, and More

Horror games have a fascinating lineage. Many gamers were initially introduced to what we now consider the blueprint for “modern” horror through titles like the original Resident Evil or Silent Hill. However, even these games had their own influences. One such influence was an obscure Japanese game called Sweet Home. But, when it comes to 3D horror, Alone in the Dark brought an unparalleled experience. Based on the unique cosmic horror writings of H.P. Lovecraft, this series unfortunately witnessed a rapid decline in its sequels.

Surprising everyone, Alone in the Dark is making a comeback as an apparent reboot of the series that aims to return to its survival-horror roots. Although a few leaks had circulated, the announcement was still unexpected. There are numerous mysteries surrounding this revival of the historic IP, but fear not, as we have delved into the depths of the internet to bring you all the information we could find about Alone in the Dark.

The biggest mystery surrounding Alone in the Dark right now is its release date. No hints of a release window were given during the announcement, indicating that it is likely still a considerable way off. While we can only speculate, it currently feels like a fall 2024 title.

Alone in the Dark is set to release exclusively on current-generation consoles, namely the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as PC. The Nintendo Switch was not listed and may be left behind with the previous generation.

The reboot announcement came with a revealing trailer to dissect. It opens with a haunting rendition of “The House of the Rising Sun” as a little girl hangs various dolls in her room. Sitting on her bed, she places a noose around her neck, although the other end remains untied.

The trailer transitions between various characters who speak about the area and people, accompanied by disturbing imagery. A man, seemingly a psychiatrist or doctor, inquires about the main character’s “condition.”

In addition to snippets of gameplay, the trailer showcases different mechanics and game systems while a preacher delivers an impassioned speech. It concludes with a woman lounging with a cigarette, welcoming us “to the madhouse.”

As mysterious as the trailer may be, the accompanying PlayStation Blog post sheds further light on the details. We learn that this new rendition of Alone in the Dark will be written by Mikael Hedberg, the writer of SOMA and Amnesia: The Dark Descent, with creature designs by Guy Davis, a frequent collaborator with Guillermo del Toro.

According to the blog, the game combines psychological horror with a Southern Gothic setting in the 1920s. Players will have the option to assume the role of Edward Carnby, the protagonist from the original series, or Emily Hartwood, as they embark on a quest to uncover the secrets hidden within the Darceto mansion asylum and find Emily’s missing uncle.

Little else is known about the specifics of the narrative, other than it will be an entirely original story that draws inspiration from the characters, locations, and themes of the original trilogy of games.

Additionally, it was revealed that there will be a prologue chapter named “Grace in the Dark,” featuring Grace from Alone in the Dark 2. However, as of now, this demo is exclusively available to those who played it at Gamescom 2022.

At the THQ Nordic Showcase, two new trailers were unveiled, focusing on the characters delivering monologues. The first showcased David Harbour’s chilling performance as Edward Carnby. The second featured Jodie Comer’s portrayal of Emily Hartwood.

While the trailer provided glimpses of gameplay, the blog offers further insights into how the game will play.

Exploration and conversations between the two characters are prominent, although there is no mention of any dialogue systems at this time. Given Edward’s detective background, it wouldn’t be surprising if such systems were included, but for now, that remains uncertain.

Puzzle-solving will be a major component of the game. The trailer briefly showcases a breaker or switch puzzle, as well as a moment where players are required to rotate three plates on a wall.

Apart from solving puzzles and navigating dark, eerie environments, Alone in the Dark incorporates third-person shooter elements. Although the glimpses are fleeting, it appears to feature standard survival-horror-style aiming and shooting. There is also a brief moment of melee combat, although it likely won’t be the first choice when facing off against the grotesque creatures encountered. The developers mention that ammunition will be scarce, so having a backup plan of any kind will prove valuable.

Alone in the Dark will offer a purely single-player experience. Survival-horror games tend to be most effective when experienced solo, despite the occasional desire for a friend’s company. So, brace yourself for this descent into madness, which you must undertake alone.
