AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT vs. Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

AMD is giving its RX 6000 graphics cards a refresh, which originally launched in November 2020. The lineup now includes the new RX 6750 XT, positioned as a replacement for the RX 6700 XT that came out in March 2021. In this article, we’ll be comparing the RX 6750 XT to Nvidia’s RTX 3070 to see how they measure up.

Pricing and Availability

The RX 6750 XT is not just a price cut version of the RX 6700 XT. AMD is launching it at a price of $549, which is $70 more than the RX 6700 XT’s launch price of $479. On Nvidia’s side, the closest competitors in terms of price are the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Ti, which launched at $499 and $549, respectively.

Over the past month, the GPU shortage has eased up a bit, at least for AMD GPUs. The RX 6700 XT has been spotted selling for less than $549, sometimes as low as $484 with rebates. On the other hand, the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Ti usually have price tags in the $600-800 range.

Comparing the RX 6750 XT to the RTX 3070 can be challenging, especially when comparing the specs of GPUs from different families, and not even made by the same company. However, the RX 6750 XT has a 2.9% higher boost clock speed than the RX 6700 XT, as well as faster 18Gbps GDDR6 memory, resulting in 12.5% more memory bandwidth. Other than these improvements, the RX 6750 XT is identical to its predecessor.

Given the minor boost clock improvement and the significant increase in memory bandwidth, it seems AMD believed that the original RX 6700 XT lacked sufficient bandwidth. In the benchmark results we will discuss below, we will see if this extra bandwidth proves to be useful.

AMD tested the RX 6750 XT, RX 6700 XT, and RTX 3070 in 15 games at 1440p using their test system, which consisted of a Ryzen 7 5800X CPU and 32 GB of DDR4 memory at 3600MHz. To provide a fair perspective, we will compare AMD’s data to our own review of the RX 6700 XT, as AMD’s data may not be entirely impartial. According to AMD’s own results, the RX 6750 XT is approximately 7% faster on average compared to the RX 6700 XT, with a lead ranging from 6-9% depending on the game.

When pitted against the RTX 3070, the RX 6750 XT performs similarly in most games. AMD’s numbers show it outperforming the RTX 3070 in games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Borderlands 3, but falling behind in Forza Horizon 5 and Metro Exodus. It’s worth noting that AMD conducted its tests with Smart Access Memory, which can boost performance on an all-AMD system.

Although AMD didn’t provide exact numbers, it appears that the RX 6750 XT performs on par with the RTX 3070, which is surprising. In our testing of the RX 6700 XT, it had a lead over Nvidia’s competing card. To get a complete picture of the RX 6750 XT’s performance, we’ll have to wait for third-party benchmarks.

Upscaling and Ray Tracing

Both AMD and Nvidia are utilizing software-based upscalers to enhance image quality and performance. An upscaler is an algorithm that can make a low-resolution image appear high-resolution. Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is more advanced than AMD’s equivalent, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), but they differ in implementation.

DLSS requires Tensor cores, which means that no AMD GPUs can utilize it, only Nvidia GPUs from the 20 or 30 series. On the other hand, FSR has a minimum requirement of an RX 590 (launched in 2017) or a GTX 1070, making AMD’s support for Nvidia GPUs actually better than Nvidia’s support for its own GPUs. Currently, DLSS is viewed as the superior upscaler, but Nvidia’s advantage might not last long, as FSR 2.0 is set to release this summer.

Ray tracing is another focus for both graphics companies. Nvidia’s ray tracing performance tends to outperform that of AMD. However, ray tracing is demanding on both Nvidia and AMD hardware and can significantly decrease frame rates.

Where Does the RX 6750 XT Fit In?

Due to its higher MSRP, the RX 6750 XT finds itself in an awkward position. It can’t match the value offered by the RX 6700 XT. This refresh seems perplexing, especially considering that the RX 6700 XT is readily available. Users would likely be disappointed if AMD stopped producing the RX 6700 XT, considering its superior performance for the price.

Other GPUs with similar price points, like the RX 6800, RTX 3070, and RTX 3070 Ti, are still selling for inflated prices. In this context, the RX 6750 XT could serve as a viable alternative, albeit slightly slower, as long as it remains readily available.
