Another PC Game Demands 32GB of RAM

The Changing Landscape of PC Gaming Requirements

Developer WB Games Avalanche recently unveiled the PC system requirements for the highly anticipated Hogwarts Legacy, and it’s the second game in 2023 to call for a staggering 32GB of RAM. This follows in the footsteps of Returnal, which was the first high-profile release to demand such a massive amount of memory. It appears that the industry standard for PC gaming is evolving, challenging the longstanding belief that 16GB of RAM is sufficient.

Minimum Requirements and Beyond

Fortunately, you don’t need a full 32GB of RAM to run Hogwarts Legacy smoothly. Similar to Returnal, the game’s minimum specs only require 16GB of RAM. However, when considering the other specifications needed for optimal performance, this is still a significant requirement. The minimum requirements include an Intel Core i5-6600 and Nvidia GTX 960, enabling you to play the game at 720p with a 30 frames per second (fps) limit, along with low-quality graphics.

If you want to experience Hogwarts Legacy at 1440p or 4K resolutions, you’ll need to upgrade your RAM to a whopping 32GB. To fully enjoy the game at the Ultra Quality preset in 4K, the developer recommends an Intel Core i7-10700K paired with either an Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti or AMD RX 7900 XT. In other words, you’ll require a top-of-the-line PC to immerse yourself in the game’s full glory.

Comparatively Less Demanding Titles

Not all PC games have such demanding RAM requirements. For example, the recently released Callisto Protocol only necessitates 16GB of RAM, and it can even run with 8GB. Similarly, the upcoming Atomic Heart recommends a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

These requirements seem surprising when considering Hogwarts Legacy’s planned console releases. While it is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the developer intends to port the game to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch later in 2023. However, the publisher, WB Games, faced performance issues with the previous release, Gotham Knights, on older consoles and ultimately decided to cancel those versions prior to launch.

Is 32GB of RAM Now a Necessity for Gaming PCs?

Considering the RAM demands of both Returnal and Hogwarts Legacy, it might be time to consider upgrading your gaming PC’s memory. RAM plays a crucial role in PC gaming, as it stores short-term data for your CPU. Games that feature expansive open worlds and offer player choice require more memory. This explains why processors like AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which include extra memory on the chip, have shown improved performance in games like Far Cry 6.

The developer has confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will be compatible with the Steam Deck, which comes with a modest 16GB of memory. This suggests that the game will run smoothly without requiring the full 32GB of RAM. It also reinforces the notion that expensive DDR5 memory upgrades are not necessary to enjoy the game.

Furthermore, Hogwarts Legacy will support AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2 and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) 3. If you own an RTX 40-series GPU, you’ll be able to utilize DLSS Frame Generation.

At this point, it’s difficult to determine the exact benefits of having 32GB of RAM in games like Hogwarts Legacy and Returnal. We’ll have to wait until the games are released to see how additional memory affects performance. However, if you’re considering an upgrade sooner rather than later, be sure to read our guide on how to install RAM.
