We have gathered a wealth of information from the game’s trailers, including the one showcased during the recent Ubisoft Forward event. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Story

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set during the Viking invasions of England in the late 8th century. Players will control Eivor, a Viking raider leading expeditions into England to fight, conquer, and establish Norse settlements in the British Isles. The main antagonist is Alfred the Great, the King of Wessex, who fiercely opposes the Viking invaders. While Ubisoft has kept some details of the story under wraps, it appears to be in line with the narrative of the recent entries in the series. In an interview with GameSpot, the game’s Narrative Director, Darby McDevitt, confirmed that Valhalla will continue the storylines introduced in Origins and Odyssey. The team at Ubisoft has worked hard to connect the lore of all the games in the series, creating a cohesive universe that seamlessly ties into Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Customize Your Character and Choose Your Destiny

Building upon the RPG elements introduced in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Valhalla offers players the ability to customize their protagonist, Eivor. Players can choose to play as either a male or female character and have the freedom to customize their appearance with clothing, tattoos, and accessories. Moreover, you can switch between male and female at any point in the game, with each choice impacting the narrative. Game Director Eric Baptizat explained that this option was important to give players the ability to shape their own experience within the overarching story. Unlike previous entries where the choice of protagonist affected the narrative significantly, Valhalla ensures that players can enjoy all the game’s possibilities without missing out on any content.

Intense and Brutal Combat

Valhalla takes combat to a new level of intensity. Unlike previous entries that emphasized stealth, Valhalla encourages players to engage in full-on conflict using a variety of medieval weapons such as swords and axes. Combat customization plays a crucial role, allowing players to equip different skills and gear to suit their preferred playstyle. The visceral combat is further enhanced by a Mortal Kombat-esque X-ray function, which enables players to witness the brutal impact of their weapons on enemies. According to Game Director Benoit Richer, this feature occurs during gameplay and can be triggered by the player. The combat in Valhalla is deliberate and strategic, requiring players to approach each encounter thoughtfully. The game also features the beloved skill trees seen in previous entries, offering players a myriad of options for combat customization, including ranged, up-close, and stealth approaches.

Build and Expand Your Settlement

The Vikings were known not only for their warfare but also for their exploration and trading skills. Valhalla delves into these other aspects of Viking culture by allowing players to build and upgrade their own settlement in England. Structures can be created to provide various benefits, such as better troops through a barracks. The settlement serves as a safe haven, similar to the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2. As the leader of the Viking settlement, Eivor will not solely rely on violence to solve problems but will also have the opportunity to negotiate and form alliances as they expand their influence. The settlement will change the game’s structure, encouraging players to return after each adventure, offering a fresh take on the open-world format.

Assist Friends with Custom Raiders

Valhalla introduces a unique multiplayer element that allows players to create custom “mercenary” Vikings, which can be shared with other players. You can send your raiders to assist your friends or recruit mercenaries from your friends’ games to aid you in your own campaign. This innovative feature replaces the traditional seamless co-op mode, seen in previous Assassin’s Creed titles. Although a traditional co-op mode is not expected in Valhalla, this new system still allows players to indirectly support and collaborate with their friends using their customized mercenaries.

World Events Add Depth to the Quest System

The quest system in Valhalla takes a departure from the standard side quest format. Due to the nature of the protagonist being an outsider and foreign invader in England, the game’s narrative director, Darby McDevitt, explained that players will not receive typical side missions from the locals. Instead, players will have to actively explore the world to discover additional activities known as “world events.” This new approach aims to enhance realism and reduce the reliance on repetitive side quests. While the exact frequency and triggers for these events are yet to be disclosed, this system promises a refreshing take on quest design, ensuring a more engaging and dynamic gameplay experience.
