Jin is not just a ruthless killer. Despite his determination to protect his home from invaders and his ventures to Iki Island in the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut expansion, Jin has a sensitive side. This side is evident not only in his interactions with other characters but also in the side activities he undertakes. From finding solace in hot springs and playing his flute to composing Haiku and following foxes to their shrines, Jin can gain power in various ways.
Iki Island introduces a new way for Jin to express his love for nature while earning new charms and a trophy — Animal Sanctuaries. By liberating captured animals from Mongol invaders and playing the flute to earn their trust and affection, Jin can unlock unique upgrades. There are a total of nine Animal Sanctuaries, categorized into three groups based on the type of animal: cats, deer, and monkeys. Here’s where you can find them all.
Cat Animal Sanctuaries

The first set of animals Jin sets free from the clutches of the Mongols are cats. By freeing at least two out of the three cat Animal Sanctuaries, you will be rewarded with the Charm of Nekoma’s Hunt. This charm extends the range of your kunai when thrown during a chain assassination. The effect of the charm becomes even stronger as you free more cat sanctuaries.
West of Zasho River
Located on the western bank of the Zasho River and southwest of Fort Sakai, the easiest cat sanctuary awaits. Approach the little kitties in the open field, play your flute, and complete this sanctuary.
East of Old Gambler’s Wood
To the east of the Old Gambler’s Wood and directly south of Kitsune’s Pond, you’ll find the next cat sanctuary. Beware of the Mongols guarding this sanctuary. Defeat them and charm the cats with your flute to unlock the final upgrade to your charm.
North of Barrier Cove
The last cat sanctuary is situated at the northeasternmost point of the map near Barrier Cove. For a safer journey, approach it from Thunderhead Cliffs. Cross the bridge and locate the final group of cats to play for.
Deer Animal Sanctuaries
Deer are known for their gracefulness and cautiousness, often fleeing when approached. However, brave the challenges of finding all the deer sanctuaries, for it is well worth it. Freeing these sanctuaries rewards you with the Charm of Sugaru’s Sight. With this charm, you can fire up to three arrows at once, and its power increases as you complete more sanctuaries.
Sly Hunter’s Forest
In the northwest, just south of the Sly Hunter’s Forest, lies the first deer sanctuary. Beware of the Mongols guarding this sanctuary. Look for their large campfire, eliminate them, and befriend the graceful deer.
Zasho River Crossing
Towards the eastern end of the map, near the middle, you’ll find the next group of deer on a small island inside the Zasho River, just north of the Cloud Forest Temple. Cross the water, deal with the Mongol forces, and set these deer free.
Shattered Cliffs
The last deer Animal Sanctuary is free of combat. Head to the far western side of Gambler’s Wood, a bit south of Fune’s Refuge. Play your flute to unlock your final charm upgrade.
Monkey Animal Sanctuaries

Monkeys are renowned for their playfulness and intelligence. Unfortunately, the Mongols pose a threat to these bright-faced monkeys. However, your efforts in rescuing them will be rewarded with the Charm of Mashira’s Protection. This charm causes healing to cost one extra resolve. However, it temporarily increases your window for performing a perfect parry and perfect dodge, making it easier to execute these powerful moves. Save all the monkeys to maximize its benefits.
Raider’s Promontory
At the very northern tip of the map, on the small island just off of Iki, lies Raider’s Promontory. The monkey sanctuary is on the eastern coast and free from Mongol influence. Make the journey, play a soothing song for the monkeys, and set them free.
South of Smuggler’s Wood
Your next stop is in the far south, along the river’s coast, south of Smuggler’s Wood. At Saruiwa Overlook, you’ll encounter a camp of Mongols that must be dealt with. Prepare for a fight to complete this Animal Sanctuary.
Mountain at Saruiwa
To reach the final sanctuary, you must channel your inner monkey. Head all the way down to the southwesternmost point of Iki Island, where you’ll find a mountain at Saruiwa. Take your time climbing and platforming to reach the top. Once you do, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of new monkey friends, a breathtaking view, and your final charm upgrade.
If you successfully complete all the Animal Sanctuaries, you will earn the Chiyoko’s Song trophy for your dedicated efforts.
