If you’re an avid player of God of War, you know that the game is filled with hidden treasures and secrets that can keep you engaged for hours. Among these treasures are the coveted Nornir chests, special boxes that hold some of the game’s most powerful items and skills. Opening these chests requires you to solve the puzzle of the three magic runes that adorn them. Don’t worry if you’re having trouble cracking the code, though. We’ve got you covered with a complete guide on how to find and open all 22 Nornir chests in the game, listed in the order in which you’ll come across them.
Chest No. 1: Wildwoods
Your journey begins when you’re accompanying Kratos and Atreus on their hunt for the stag. As you navigate through the Wildwoods, you’ll stumble upon a stone ruin where Draugr and multiple paths await you. Instead of following Atreus straight ahead, take the path to the right. Break through the wooden barrier and reveal the Nornir chest. Look for the three stone tablets bearing the runes and use the Leviathan Axe to destroy them, unlocking the chest.
Chest No. 2: Temple
Continue your journey through the Wildwoods towards the mountain, and you’ll come across a stone temple where you’ll engage in your first battle with a Revenant. Follow the path downwards, and you’ll spot the Nornir chest ahead of you. Look for the first rune on the right side of the chest, and you’ll find the other two runes across the drawbridge on the opposite side of the room.
Chest No. 3: Wildwood’s Edge
As you transition from the Wildwoods to the Riverlands, you’ll enter a building where you’ll eventually encounter a ceiling covered in spikes. In order to proceed, you’ll need to raise the spikes. On the far side of the spiky ceiling, take the path to the right and climb on top of it. Look to your right, and you’ll find the Nornir chest. The runes are scattered around the area, some of which may require you to raise the ceiling to get a better angle, especially the one in the scaffolding above where you initially crossed beneath the ceiling.
Chest No. 4: Fire Troll Arena
Prepare yourself for a battle with a fire troll and several Shadow enemies. After defeating them, explore the left side of the arena to find the Nornir chest. This chest features a different kind of puzzle — instead of destroying three rune tablets, you’ll need to ring three bells marked with the runes. Remember, all three bells need to be ringing simultaneously in order to open the chest. Two bells are located near the chest, but the last one is on the far side of the path, close to the large ribs protruding from the ground.
Chest No. 5: Forgotten Caverns
Once you reach the Lake of Nine, you’ll have the opportunity to explore various areas along its coast. Head to the west side of the lake and dock your boat at the beach to discover the Forgotten Caverns. Just left of the landing spot, you’ll find the Nornir chest. Look above and to the left of the chest to spot three chimes hanging from a wooden pillar.
Chest No. 6: Veithurgard
From the beach landing, ascend the stairs towards the dragon, then follow the path to the left. You’ll come across the Nornir chest just up the hill from the bridge leading to the castle. The first rune stone can be found in the cave area next to the iron gate beside the Nornir gate. Look for the second rune at the foothills near the nearby wooden bridge. The third rune can be challenging to spot. Climb up the hill on the west side of the area near the Nornir chest, where you’ll find one of the dragon shrines. From the edge of the area, look down towards the stone ruins ahead. You’ll find the last rune located on the outside of the ring, close to the cliff edge.
Chest No. 7: Lookout Tower
Land on the beach east of the Vanaheim Tower, where you’ll notice spikes protruding from the sand. To the left of your landing spot, you’ll spot the Nornir chest. The chimes are scattered on the cliffs above, but you’ll need to clear the spikes blocking your access before you can strike them with your axe. Use the spinning wood gear to lower the spikes.
Chest No. 8: Foothills
Leave the Lake of Nine and head towards the Mountain. When you reach Sindri’s shop, venture up the hills to the west until you stumble upon the Nornir chest. Opening this chest requires you to find three pillars that can be spun to match the runes on the chest. The first pillar is right next to the chest, and the second can be found at the base of the path you climbed. To locate the third pillar, proceed up the path to the north, where you’ll encounter a torch emitting poisonous gas. Freeze the torch to reveal the spinner, then quickly recall your axe and strike the pillar to align the symbols.
Chest No. 9: Alfheim Lake of Light
As you arrive at the Lake of Light, row southeast until you find a beach where you can dock your boat. Follow the path upwards until you reach an iron gate that remains open for a limited time. Sprint through the gate and immediately turn left to find the Nornir chest in a round gazebo-like area. You’ll find multiple chimes scattered around the chest, but only three of them are genuine. You’ll need to test them to identify the correct ones.
Chest No. 10: Alfheim Ringed Temple Trench
Continue progressing through the trench until you reach a point where a control panel lowers the floor. The Nornir chest is located on the left side of the area. Lower the floor halfway to reveal the first two rune tablets below, then drop it all the way to expose the last rune tablet behind you.
Chest No. 11: Alfheim Ringed Temple
On the opposite side of the trench, you’ll encounter a blue door leading to the temple, although you won’t be able to enter it right away. Turn left from the door and follow the path to discover a door partially sealed by vines. Clear the vines, then strike the two bells outside the door before entering. Inside, you’ll find the Nornir chest with the last bell directly above it.
Chest No. 12: Alfheim Ringed Temple Exit
After completing your tasks in the Ringed Temple, the path will lead you back to the blue door, but from the opposite direction. You’ll come across a Light crystal that can be inserted into a socket on the bottom floor, creating light bridges above. Climb to the second level using the light bridges to locate the Nornir chest, which is surrounded by a lattice wall. Stand on the right side of the chest and look through a hole to find two chimes. The third chime is behind you.
Chest No. 13: Fafnir’s Ravine
After leaving Sindri’s shop, venture into the woods and eliminate the Draugr. Facing the entrance of the stronghold, explore the right edge of the area to locate the Nornir chest. Two of the bells needed to open the chest can be found just above it, while the third is located at the top of the waterfall to the southwest.
Chest No. 14: Inside the Mountain
Once you’ve cleared the Black Breath, your journey through the mountain will take you through darkened tunnels. You’ll reach a room with a wooden bridge riddled with holes, leading to a large open chamber with waterfalls in the distance. Prior to approaching the chest on your left, head to the northwest side of the area to find a wooden barrier and a Light crystal behind it. Activate the crystal to create a bridge leading to a room with the chest. Instead of having runes on the chest itself, the runes are painted on the wall behind it. Match the runes on the spinners to the symbols on the wall in order to unlock the chest.
Chest No. 15: Inside the Mountain — Above the Claw
After using the claw to ascend further inside the mountain, you’ll pass Sindri’s shop and acquire lightning arrows for Atreus. Follow the path until you encounter a vertical shaft with a wooden ramp leading to the right. The Nornir chest can be found on the wall to the left. The first seal to break is located in a room behind you, just off the hallway you came through. The second seal is beside the elevator shaft on the wall, accessible by lowering and crossing the drawbridge. The third seal is in the hallway with vertically moving crushers. Wait for the first crusher to drop down, then locate the rune on the right side of the piston.
Chest No. 16: Witch’s Cave
After lowering the water level in the Lake of Nine, you’ll eventually row back to the Witch’s Cave. Take the elevator up and proceed to the south, descending into an area of the cave that was previously inaccessible. Shoot the crystals to create light bridges and follow the path down to find the Nornir chest. The first rune is located behind you, near a chest that you can’t open yet. The second rune can be found up the hill behind you, close to the climbable wall path leading out of the cave. To locate the last rune, clear the sap barrier to the left of the chest and climb up the wall. Look to your left to spot the rune.
Chest No. 17: Light Elf Outpost
Head to the Light Elf Outpost at the northern end of the Lake of Nine. With the water level lowered, you’ll be able to land at a beach where you’ll encounter various enemies, a sealed hidden chamber, and the Nornir chest. The first runestone can be found east, near the Light crystal socket. Look for the second runestone on a pillar just off the island’s western coast. The third runestone is located on the northwest side, on the cliff wall as you climb towards the top.

Chest No. 18: Witch’s House
After your visit to Helheim, return to the Witch’s Cave and climb the wall to exit the cave into the yard in front of the turtle house. Move towards the northwest side of the yard and climb up the chain, then turn left to find a Nornir chest. Proceed to the end of the path, past the chain, until you reach the cliff’s edge. You’ll notice a stone structure next to the house containing a wind trap with the Winds of Hel energy inside. Acquire the energy and use it to power the chest, revealing the runes. Your next step is to locate the two pillars near the chest. One is a spinner, where one paddle moves a single rune while the other paddle moves both. The second is a sideways Winds of Hel trap that, when powered, reveals the runes. Match the spinner with the first two runes, then power the third until it aligns with the last rune. Remove the wind’s energy and return it to the chest to open it.
Chest No. 19: Tyr’s Vault
Once you’ve opened Tyr’s Vault, you’ll encounter a puzzle involving a spinning sphere in the center of the vault, where you can obtain the Black Rune. You’ll need to open three rooms containing gears that must be turned to solve the puzzle. In the second room, you’ll discover a Nornir chest embedded in one of the walls. Destroy the first runestone located on the east wall of the room with the gear. The second runestone can be found in the hallway with two horizontally moving crushing blocks. Move past them towards a chest at the far end, then turn around and face the crushers again. Freeze the crusher closest to you when it extends, then look through the machinery on the right side as the second block extends to find the runestone. The third rune is located in the hallway with vertically dropping crushers. Wait for the first crusher to drop, then examine the piston on the right side to find it.
Chest No. 20: Helheim Dock
During your second trip to Helheim, you’ll notice the Nornir chest directly below you at the beginning, but you won’t be able to reach it for some time. Keep progressing until you reach the dock with the ship on your right. Instead of going right, head left and push the large cubic rock along the left bridge until it drops into a gap, allowing you to cross to the area beneath the first tower where you started. You’ll find the Nornir chest here. The first runestone is located to the right, heading north under the tower. Clear some brambles on your left and proceed past them, looking for the stone on your left. To locate the second runestone, pull another large cubic rock from the north wall of the tower and position it next to the archway you just cleared, giving you access to the other side. The runestone is situated inside the cube. To find the last runestone, pull the block out as far as possible, climb up onto it, and onto the platform with the chest. Look north to find the rune on the back of a broken pillar in the water. Note that this chest isn’t officially tracked as a Nornir chest on the Helheim collectibles list, but it does provide you with a Horn of Blood Mead to increase your Rage meter.
Chest No. 21: King’s Hollow
To enter King’s Hollow, you’ll need to complete the “Hail to the King” Favor given by Brok and Sindri. Make sure you’ve fulfilled all their other tasks before attempting to gain entry. Once inside, navigate through the area until you reach the main gate with three entry stones. Eventually, you’ll discover the hidden remains of the dwarf king behind his throne, leading to a secret passage that takes you outside the stronghold wall. Find an opening in the wall and head towards the edge to locate the Nornir chest. To open it, grab the Winds of Hel and rotate the two bells on the right and left sides of the archway, allowing you to pass through and reach the chest. Use the winds to rotate the right bell until it matches the chest, then place the winds in the left bell, which actually contains two rune bells. Hit the right bell first, then head left and hit the two rune bells as they spin to activate all three.
Chest No. 22: Cliffs of the Raven
The final Nornir chest is the most complex one to open. Venture into the Cliffs of the Raven area and proceed through the level, lowering chains and opening gates along the way. You’ll eventually notice the Nornir chest perched on the cliffs above you. Return to the path north of the dead giant that leads back towards the beach. Descend the hill and look to the left for a hallway leading to a dark tunnel with a wind trap. Grab the wind and throw it into the trap on the wall, left of the hallway where you found it, to open the gate there.
Next, climb up to the Nornir chest and locate a spot to the left where you can jump across to a cliff wall and start climbing. Retrieve the wind from the gate, then look north for a wind trap attached to a rune spinner. Leave the wind until the rune with a triangle pointing right appears, then take the wind and turn east to find another trap nestled against the cliffs.
Climb back down to the Nornir chest, grab the wind, and place it in the spinner southwest of the chest. Leave it there until the rune that resembles a Z appears. Return the wind to the trap against the cliffs, then climb up the chain to find the last spinner on your right. Take the wind and spin the rune until it matches the one that looks like an R. Return the wind to the cliff, climb down, and finally open the chest.
