GTA 6: Speculation on Release Date, Gameplay Rumors, and More

There was a time when Rockstar would release a new Grand Theft Auto game almost every year. The current release schedule is quite different, with multiple re-releases of Grand Theft Auto V. However, that hasn’t stopped us from eagerly anticipating the next installment, which has yet to be officially announced. While we can enjoy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition in the meantime and look forward to GTA: San Andreas for Oculus Quest 2, the question remains: What about Grand Theft Auto 6?

Although GTA 6 hasn’t been officially announced by name, Rockstar has confirmed on Twitter that they are working on “a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.” While it’s likely to be GTA 6, the company has released non-numbered installments in the past, such as Vice City and San Andreas.

According to various reports, GTA 6 has been in development for some time. Rockstar reportedly halted production on Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters to focus on making GTA 6, following the poor reception of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive. This decision bodes well for the release of GTA 6.

A Bloomberg report from July 2022 provided additional insights into the game, including information about the protagonists, a possible release window, and workplace improvements at Rockstar Games.

In September 2022, a massive leak unveiled several gameplay elements for GTA 6, indicating that the game is deep in development.

With all that in mind, what do we actually know about GTA 6? When can we expect to play it? How will it compare to previous entries? And which platforms will it be available on? In this article, we’ll delve into everything we currently know about Grand Theft Auto 6.

A Word on GTA 6 Leaks

In mid-September 2022, a major leak showcased early footage of GTA 6. While the footage was unfinished, it likely provides an accurate representation of the final product to some extent. The leaked footage revealed an armed robbery, animations, and even sections with voice acting. Rockstar Games confirmed the authenticity of the leaks but assured fans that they wouldn’t impact the game’s development.

It’s important to note that many GTA 6 “leaks” are fake or incorrect, so it’s essential to be cautious and consider the source before believing any information.

GTA 6 Release Date Speculation

Rockstar hasn’t officially announced the release date for GTA 6 yet, so it remains unclear when the game will launch. However, numerous leakers and reporters suggest that it may release in 2024 or later.

This speculation is supported by Take-Two’s financial projections for fiscal year 2025, which indicate the company expects to achieve significant net bookings. To generate such revenue, it’s reasonable to assume that something monumental like GTA 6 would need to be released. If these projections hold true, we can expect the game to launch between 2024 and 2025.

Leaker Tom Henderson, known for reliable information on Call of Duty, Battlefield, and GTA, believes that the game won’t be released for at least a few more years. Jason Schreier, a video game reporter for Bloomberg, also supports this claim based on information from Rockstar developers.

While Rockstar confirmed in February 2022 that active development on the next GTA game was underway, insiders estimate that the game won’t ship until 2024 at the earliest due to a greater emphasis on a healthier workplace and less mandatory overtime.

Is There a GTA 6 Trailer?

As of now, there isn’t an official GTA 6 trailer. However, based on the marketing timeline of previous GTA games, we can expect a trailer to be released in 2023. The first trailer for GTA V was published two years before the game’s launch, while the first GTA IV trailer was released a year before its release date. Assuming the speculated release window of 2024 to 2025 is accurate, a GTA 6 trailer may arrive within the next year.

GTA 6 Platforms

Given the projected release window, it’s likely that GTA 6 will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (with a typical delay for the PC version). Each console generation since the original PlayStation has received at least one GTA game, and there’s no reason to believe this trend will change.

Considering the ambitious nature of the game, it’s unlikely that GTA 6 will be developed for the previous console generation (PS4, Xbox One) without significant compromises. It’s also not expected to come to the Nintendo Switch, although a cloud version, similar to Hitman 3, Control, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, is a possibility.

What Can We Expect from GTA 6?

GTA has always been known for its open-world exploration, fast cars, and action-packed gameplay. While it’s uncertain if GTA 6 will revolutionize the formula once again, expectations are high given the game’s lengthy development period. One possibility is that GTA 6 will take place in a modern version of Vice City. The map itself may evolve over time, as seen in GTA Online.

Reports indicate that GTA 6 will feature the series’ first female protagonist, a Latina character working alongside another protagonist. The game is also expected to be more thoughtful and sensitive in its satire, being mindful of marginalized groups.

Customization, player choice, and explosive gameplay will likely be key features once again. Sandbox-style missions that offer players multiple approaches, similar to Hitman 3, are desired but challenging to implement in an open-world game. Returning characters from previous GTA games, such as Claude, Tommy Vercetti, and Carl Johnson, are also anticipated.

First-person gameplay, a popular feature in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, is expected to make a comeback in GTA 6.

Armed robberies, as seen in leaked footage, will likely be a prominent feature in the game, but their specific implementation in the final product remains unknown.

Will GTA 6 Have GTA Online?

GTA V introduced GTA Online, a multiplayer mode that became a significant part of the game’s success. It’s highly likely that GTA 6 will include some form of multiplayer functionality. Whether the entire game will be online-only or if there will be a dedicated multiplayer mode, similar to the previous installment, is yet to be seen. However, it seems unlikely that Rockstar would abandon multiplayer functionality after GTA Online’s success.

Interestingly, GTA 6’s version of GTA Online might not include dedicated servers. This decision was reportedly made by Take-Two due to cost concerns.

Will There be DLC for GTA 6?

While it’s unclear if GTA 6 will receive DLC, it’s reasonable to assume that post-launch content will be available. Previous titles like GTA IV had story-based DLC expansions, while GTA Online continues to receive major updates. GTA insider Tez has expressed confidence in GTA 6 receiving story DLC akin to GTA IV’s expansions.

When Can You Preorder GTA 6?

GTA 6 preorders are not yet available. Based on the launch of GTA V, it’s possible that preorders will open approximately 10 months before the game’s release date. In the case of GTA V, players could preorder the game in November 2012. However, with the current trend of shorter gaps between game announcements and releases, Rockstar may opt for a different marketing strategy. Regardless, preorders won’t be available for some time.
