Fans of ChatGPT love this AI chatbot for many reasons, including its ability to generate detailed essays in just seconds. However, there’s a little-known limitation that you should be aware of: ChatGPT has a word and character limit for each query.
Reddit members and other AI enthusiasts have been discussing this for months, and luckily, there are easy workarounds to bypass this limitation using prompts.
What is the ChatGPT Word Limit?
OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has set the word and character limit as part of its ongoing development of this AI chatbot. Currently, ChatGPT is still in its research preview phase. Some issues have been identified with ChatGPT, including its tendency to exhibit “social biases, hallucinations, and adversarial prompts.” Additionally, it may produce inaccurate content when overwhelmed or when it lacks information to process.
Similarly, ChatGPT may simply stop generating content when the request is too complex for the AI to handle. This usually happens around 500 words or 4,000 characters. If you request a specific number of words above 500, you may find that the chatbot cuts off midsentence after the 500-word mark.
How to Bypass the ChatGPT Word Limit
To overcome this issue, you can use simple prompts like “go on,” “keep going,” or “continue.” For example, I tried asking ChatGPT to write a 1000-word essay on the history of Irish whiskey. It stopped at about 618 words. But when I inputted “go on,” ChatGPT continued generating my essay and ended up at 1,043 words.
Another way to work around the word limit is to set up your prompt with the limit in mind. You can start by asking ChatGPT to write the first 500 words of a 1000-word essay on a specific topic. This way, ChatGPT knows to stop at a certain point. Then, you can use prompts like “go on,” “keep going,” or “continue” to extend the content.
OpenAI’s Updates for ChatGPT
Many of the word and character limitations in ChatGPT are based on the GPT-3.5 language model. ChatGPT was introduced to the public in November 2022, using GPT-3.5 as its foundation. However, OpenAI has recently announced its latest language model, GPT-4, which offers increased word support and other exciting features. OpenAI claims that GPT-4 can process up to 25,000 words of text with enhanced accuracy, context, and creativity.
GPT-4 is currently available for ChatGPT Plus users and developers through the API. As for the free version of ChatGPT, it still operates on the GPT-3.5 language model. There is no word yet on whether it will be updated to GPT-4 in the future.
OpenAI has also collaborated with several businesses, organizations, and even governments on GPT-4. Microsoft has confirmed that its new Bing Search, featuring an AI chatbot, is built on GPT-4. The updated search engine was launched in February. However, Bing Chat has faced its own issues, as it sometimes provides users with depressed or unhinged responses. As a result, Microsoft has imposed daily turn limits on how much the chatbot can process. However, Microsoft has gradually increased conversation support, and now users can have up to 150 daily turns.
