Honkai: Star Rail offers players a diverse range of characters right from the start, covering nearly every Element and Path in its intricate combat system. Similar to Pokémon, the game incorporates Elements that have type weaknesses, which players can exploit to their advantage. Additionally, Paths define the roles that characters fulfill, such as damage dealers, shielders, and healers. While Honkai: Star Rail encourages experimentation with specific abilities and Light Cones for each character, it ensures that players have everything they need for free before considering pulling for more powerful characters later in the game.
The Trailblazer
Element: Physical, Fire
Path: Destruction
The Trailblazer, your primary character, stands out from the rest. Unlike others, they possess the unique ability to control multiple elements throughout the story, allowing you to switch between them at your leisure. As a Physical DPS, the Trailblazer inflicts substantial damage early on and continues to grow stronger as the game progresses.
March 7th
Element: Ice
Path: Preservation
March 7th is the first character to join your party early in the game. Her defensive skills provide the necessary survival boost during the early encounters until you obtain a reliable healer. Moreover, her ability to freeze opponents proves invaluable. March 7th’s energetic personality adds an extra layer of charm to the overall gaming experience!
Dan Heng
Element: Wind
Path: The Hunt
Dan Heng becomes available shortly after March 7th as you progress through the prologue. He excels in single-target attacks and possesses impressive energy recharge capabilities, particularly with his fast-charging ultimate.
Asta
Element: Fire
Path: Harmony
Although Asta technically requires a Star Rail Pass to obtain, it is a necessary component of the game’s gacha-pulling tutorial. Asta is your guaranteed first pull from the Beginner banner. Her buffs and firepower provide valuable support early in the game.
Herta
Element: Ice
Path: Erudition
Herta, the intelligent but particular owner of the Space Station, joins your party after your first run through the Simulated Universe. Like March 7th, she specializes in Ice. However, her kit focuses more on multi-target attacks rather than defense, making her unique and versatile.
Natasha
Element: Physical
Path: Abundance
Natasha is another character you can acquire as you progress through the story, specifically after reaching the Underworld in Jarilo VI. She serves as one of the few healers in the game. Fortunately, Natasha fits well into various team compositions due to her flexible nature.
Many teams benefit from having a healer, unless they primarily consist of defensive characters like March 7th. Nonetheless, having additional healing never hurts!
Qingque
Element: Quantum
Path: Erudition
Qingque is the most recent free character available in the game. You can claim her by completing the Forgotten Hall – Memory Stage 3 after reaching Trailblazer Level 21. Qingque possesses the Quantum Element, which makes her a valuable asset against enemies weak to it. If you already have Seele, there may be no need to invest heavily in Qingque. However, she ensures that you always have a Quantum character at your disposal.
Serval
Element: Electric
Path: Erudition
Serval serves as HoYoverse’s gratitude to players who reached a significant number of pre-registrations for Honkai: Star Rail. You can claim her through your in-game mail. Serval is the only Electric party member you can acquire for free, which proves especially useful against the robotic enemies in Jarilo VI.
Honkai: Star Rail is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android.
