CRPGs have a reputation for requiring a significant time commitment, and Baldur’s Gate 3 is no exception. Even during its early access phase, players were spending countless hours on just the first act of the game. However, the amount of time it takes to complete the game can vary depending on your playstyle. Some players may spend a substantial amount of time creating their character and delving into side quests, while others may focus solely on the main story. Regardless of how much of a completionist you are, we can provide you with a rough estimate of the time it will take to beat Baldur’s Gate 3.
How long is Baldur’s Gate 3?
Well, to be honest, the answer to this question is somewhat complex and may seem overwhelming. Baldur’s Gate 3 is an expansive CRPG that aims to provide a unique and personalized experience. Your playtime can be influenced by various factors, including your race, stats, skills, dialogue choices, and the outcomes of skill checks. Additionally, the game offers numerous optional activities and objectives that you can choose to engage with or ignore, as well as different difficulty levels to consider.
According to Swen Vincke, a developer at Larian Studios, an average playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 would take between 75 to 100 hours. This estimate does not include completing everything in the game; it is merely for a single playthrough. However, there will be players who spend well over 100 hours if they want to explore every nook and cranny. On average, most players seem to complete the game within the 75 to 100-hour range.
In our experience, this figure holds true if you play on the normal difficulty level and take the time to engage in side quests and explore the optional content. While a 25-hour range may seem wide for an average playthrough, when you consider factors such as your character class, the amount of combat encountered, the extent to which you role-play, and whether you play alone or in co-op, the range begins to make sense.
If we were to estimate the length of a playthrough focused solely on completing the main quest, it could take anywhere between 40 to 50 hours. However, considering the nature of the game, we do not recommend rushing through it in this manner.
For completionists, the 200-hour mark mentioned by Vincke may even seem too low. If you aim to do everything with just one of the 12 classes and 11 races (excluding subclasses and subraces), you could easily spend hundreds upon hundreds of hours exploring different character builds, playing in co-op, or venturing on solo adventures.
How many acts are in Baldur’s Gate 3?
As mentioned earlier, players got a substantial taste of Baldur’s Gate 3’s first act during the early access period. However, the full game will feature three acts. It’s worth noting that the length of each act varies. The second act is by far the longest, while the third act shrinks down to a size more similar to that of the first act. These acts serve as breakpoints, allowing players to take a break from the game and then return later to continue the story.
