We’ve all been there – after a tiring day at work, you come home looking forward to unwinding with a game on your Xbox One or Xbox One X, only to be bombarded with notifications from players wanting to chat or invite you to their group. While Xbox Live allows players from around the world to communicate, it’s not always what we’re in the mood for. Luckily, the Xbox One offers several settings that can help you avoid interruptions and appear offline, even when you’re connected to Xbox Live. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about how to appear offline on Xbox One.
Appear Offline to Everyone
If you want to appear offline to everyone, including your friends, you can easily do so in a few simple steps.
Step 1: Once you sign in to Xbox Live, press the Xbox button on your controller to access the quick menu.
Step 2: Scroll all the way to the right to the Sign-in tab and highlight and select your profile image. Click on it, and a drop-down menu will appear with various options. Choose My profile, and you’ll be directed to a new screen.
Step 3: On this screen, you’ll find a drop-down menu that says “Appear online.” You can modify this setting by selecting different options, one of which is “Appear offline.” Feel free to experiment with the various settings available.
It’s worth noting that you can also appear offline through the Xbox iOS app by tapping your profile icon in the bottom right corner and selecting “Appear offline.”
Alternatively, you can change your online status by accessing your full profile. In the top-right corner of your profile, you’ll find a menu that offers the option to appear offline. You’ll also see another option labelled “Privacy Settings,” which we’ll discuss in the next method.
Customize Your Online Status
Do you want to play with your friends but avoid being bothered by random strangers who can see you’re active? Just as you can choose to appear online to everyone, you can also adjust the privacy settings in your Microsoft account so that only specific people can view your status.
Step 1: Go to your Xbox One settings and locate the “Account” option in the menu on the left. Select it and then choose the “Privacy & online safety” tile at the top of the options list.
Step 2: Select “Xbox privacy,” and you’ll be taken to a new screen. Here, you’ll find preselected privacy choices for different types of players. The default setting for “Adult” makes your online status visible to all users, regardless of whether they’re your friends or not. The default selections for “Child” and “Teen” limit the visibility of your online status to friends.
If you choose “View details & customize,” you’ll have the ability to modify your online status and history. Select that option to proceed.
Step 3: On this page, you’ll have three options to choose from:
- “Others can see if you’re online”
- “Others can see what you’re watching or listening to”
- “Others can see your game and app history”
You can set each of these options to block, friends, or everyone, giving you plenty of customization choices for your privacy.
Using this drop-down menu, you can personalize your privacy settings to suit your preferences. For example, you can make your online status viewable to anyone, limit it to your friends list, or keep it completely private. You can also customize the display of your daily activities, such as what you’re watching, playing, or listening to. Keep in mind that if you’ve set your settings to private, your friends won’t be able to see your daily activities or personal status.
