If you’re familiar with the iconic pen-and-paper role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, then you won’t be surprised to find an abundance of dungeons in Baldur’s Gate 3. Inside these perilous dungeons, you’ll encounter a multitude of monsters, traps, and, most dauntingly, puzzles. While many aspects of the game rely on your character’s stats and rolls, puzzles put your own problem-solving abilities to the test. One such puzzling dungeon is the Gauntlet of Shar, which plays a vital role in both Shadowheart’s Daughter of Darkness quest and Astarion’s Palke Elf quest. It’s an unavoidable challenge, so let us be your Dungeon Master and guide you through its two main puzzles.
How to Solve the Mausoleum Puzzle
To begin, you will encounter your first puzzle when you reach the Thorm Mausoleum. There, you will find three paintings, and a book in the room offers a clue. The book reads, “From splendor, to tragedy, to infamy.” This hints at the order in which you should interact with the paintings near the coffin. Before attempting the challenge, it’s wise to disarm any traps in the room to ensure your safety.
Here is the correct order to interact with the paintings:
- The painting of the Moonrise Towers (southwest wall)
- The painting of Thorm weeping with his dead daughter (southeast wall)
- The painting of Thorm on his throne (north wall)
Upon completing this sequence, the doorway will open, granting you access to an elevator that will take you to the next puzzle within the dungeon.
How to Solve the Statue Puzzle
Once you exit the elevator, you will come across a statue holding a sphere. However, you cannot approach it directly. To proceed, you must explore the rooms surrounding the statue and interact with the levers, which will deactivate the lanterns. Beware, for this room is riddled with deadly traps. After disabling all the lanterns, purple markings will reveal themselves in two broken rings around the statue. Choose a single character from your party to carefully navigate through the gaps without touching the edges and interact with the orb at the center. This will unlock the next door, allowing you to progress further into the dungeon and engage in combat.
The remainder of this dungeon primarily consists of combat encounters, but you can expect some entertaining mechanics, such as facing a group that mimics your party, a stealth section, and even a bit of platforming in the dark.
