How to Create a GIF from a YouTube Video

You’ve just come across an incredible YouTube video and you can’t wait to share your favorite part as a hilarious GIF with your friends. Or maybe you’re in need of a new GIF to react to those funny tweets online. Regardless of your reason, making a GIF is actually much simpler than it seems. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can transform a few seconds of a YouTube video into a top-quality GIF file.

Use GIFs.com for Personalized Customization

Step 1: Find the YouTube video you want to convert into a GIF (maybe something from the NASA archives?) and copy its URL.

Step 2: Visit GIFs.com and paste the YouTube URL into the designated box on the left side of the page (double-check that you’ve copied the entire link for it to work properly). The website should automatically detect the video. If you prefer, you can also upload your own videos by clicking the “Drag & Drop” or “Select File” button.

Step 3: In case an ad appears in the lower-left corner of the image, make sure to click the ‘X’ to remove it (otherwise, the ad will appear in your GIF). Then, click on the timeline below the image and choose the start and end times for your animated GIF. The blue bar indicates the selected period.

Feel free to customize the duration to your preference, but keep in mind that longer animations result in larger file sizes. Some platforms where you’d like to share the GIF might have size limitations. For instance, Twitter imposes a 5MB limit on mobile devices and a 15MB limit on desktops. However, it’s worth noting that a 15MB GIF is considered quite large.

Additionally, you can add a caption or a sticker if you’d like. You also have the option to crop the image and apply other effects, such as blurring or padding, to enhance your new meme or make the image more enjoyable to watch. Once you’re satisfied, click the “Create GIF” button in the top-right corner.

Please be patient as it may take a little while to create the GIF, especially if it’s a longer one.

Step 4: On the following page, you’ll be asked to confirm the GIF’s title and add any desired tags. Once you’re done setting the preferences, click “Next.”

Step 5: The final page provides options for downloading, embedding, or sharing your newly created GIF. You can also preview what it looks like. If you wish to remove the watermark in the corner, note that it requires signing up for the premium service starting at $2 per month. However, this is unnecessary for casual GIF creation. To download your GIF, click the “Download” button and choose the preferred size from the drop-down menu.

Use Giphy for Quick Results

Another well-known online GIF-making service is Giphy. It supports YouTube and Vimeo links, as well as manual creation of GIFs from photos. Giphy offers various options to customize your GIF, allowing you to add captions and other elements to make it uniquely yours.

Step 1: Copy the YouTube URL of the video you want to make a GIF from and go to Giphy.com’s GIF maker.

Step 2: Paste the YouTube URL into the input box at the bottom of the page. Please note that creating GIFs on this site requires logging in to a Giphy account.
