How to Customize Default Apps on a Mac

When you first start using a Mac, you’ll notice that Apple has already set default apps for common file types, such as Safari for websites and Preview for pictures. In most cases, these default apps work perfectly fine and you might be happy to continue using them. However, there might be instances when you want to change the default apps on your Mac to something different.

Luckily, changing default apps on a Mac is a straightforward process. The method you use will depend on the file type you want to open. Let’s explore the different ways to customize your default apps below.

Unless you want to change your default web browser or email client (which we’ll cover in the next sections), there’s only one method you need to remember when it comes to changing your default apps on a Mac.

For example, let’s say you have an .RTF file and you want to open it using a different app instead of the default TextEdit, Apple’s built-in text-editing app. To do this, simply Ctrl+click the file in question and then click on “Get Info.”

This action will open a new window. Within this window, locate the “Open with” section and choose your preferred app from the drop-down list. Finally, click on “Change All.” From now on, any file with the same extension will open with your newly selected default app.

Changing Your Default Web Browser

Safari, Apple’s web browser, is set as the default on your Mac. While Safari prioritizes privacy, it may not be as fast as other alternatives. If you have a different web browser in mind, here’s how you can switch your default web browser on your Mac:

  1. Open “System Preferences.”
  2. Click on “General” located in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down a bit and you’ll find the “Default web browser” option. Click on the drop-down arrow and select your desired web browser.

That’s it! Your selection is now set as the new default web browser. Whenever you click on a link, whether it’s in an email received from a friend or elsewhere, your new default browser will open the page.
