How to Delete or Deactivate Your Slack Account

Slack is a versatile social app designed for work purposes. It enables users to create various channels for discussions, advice-seeking, one-on-one conversations, and content sharing. If you’ve become accustomed to using Slack during your work-from-home experiences over the past few years, you might find this guide helpful.

However, circumstances change. Your company may have transitioned away from Slack, or perhaps you’ve completed the project you were working on using Slack. Alternatively, you may be leaving for a new opportunity and wish to completely delete your Slack account before moving on. To deactivate your Slack profile permanently, you need to follow a specific process. We will outline the steps and explain the implications for your account going forward.

How to Deactivate a Slack Account

Before you begin, make sure you have your Slack login details ready. You can perform these steps either on the web app or the desktop client, as both methods will work.

Step 1: Locate your profile picture in the top-right corner of your Slack window and click on it.

Step 2: In the dropdown menu, select “Profile.”

Select Profile in Slack

Step 3: Click on the three-dot button below your profile, also known as the “More” option.

Step 4: Select “Account Settings.”

Choose Account Settings in Slack

Step 5: You will be directed to a new page displaying various account information. Scroll down until you find the button to “Deactivate your account” and select it.

Slack offers important advice at this point. You have the option to contact the owner of the specific Slack workspace and request that they delete all your profile information from their channels as well. If you want to completely erase your presence from this Slack workspace, consider taking this additional step (more about the consequences of deleting your account below).

Step 6: Confirm your decision to delete your account by re-entering your login and password. Your account will be deactivated immediately.

What to Consider When Deleting a Slack Account

  • If you are simply switching to a new email address, there is no need to delete your Slack account entirely. Slack provides a settings option that allows you to effortlessly replace your current email without losing any data. Additionally, you can change your username at any time.

  • Deactivating your account only removes it from the specific Slack workspace you are in. Your other Slack accounts will remain untouched and will not be affected. If you wish to delete yourself from Slack altogether, you will need to repeat the process for each workspace individually.

  • The term “deactivating” is used instead of “deleting” because your messages and files will still be retained within the Slack workspace. An administrator of the workspace can reactivate your account if needed, for example, if you return for another project in the future. However, as mentioned earlier, to completely erase all associated information, you will need to contact an administrator and make a specific request.

  • Slack can be integrated with various apps. If you have installed apps that work with Slack and subsequently deactivate all your Slack accounts, those apps may no longer function properly, or at least not in the same manner. Be prepared to log in differently or ask the Workspace Owner for specific permissions regarding the apps you still require.

  • If you are the Primary Owner of a workspace, you cannot deactivate your account using this method. A workspace requires a Primary Owner to exist. You will need to transfer Primary Ownership to another account or shut down the Slack space entirely.
