How to Double-Space Your Text in Google Docs

Whether it’s due to personal preference or a requirement from the APA or MLA writing style, we’ll guide you on how to double-space your text in Google Docs.

The great thing about using Google Docs is that you can easily apply double-spacing to your entire document or specific sections of text. And the best part is, you can do this both on the web and in the Google Docs mobile app.

Double-Spacing in Google Docs on the Web

To start, head over to Google Docs on the web, sign in to your account, and either open an existing document or create a new one.

Step 1: If you already have text in your document that you want to double-space, select the entire text on the page or within the document. If it’s specific text, simply highlight that portion.

If your document is empty, you can move on to the next step.

Step 2: Now, go to the toolbar and find the Line and paragraph spacing button, or you can go to the Format menu and choose Line and paragraph spacing.

Step 3: In the drop-down or pop-out menu, select Double as your desired line spacing option.

Step 4: Your selected text or new document will now have double-spacing applied. If you want to change the line spacing later, simply follow the same steps.

Step 1: Create a new document or open an existing one. To enter edit mode, tap the Edit button (pencil icon) located at the bottom right.

Step 2: If there’s existing text that you want to double-space, select it. On Android, tap and hold a word, while on iPhone, double-tap a word, and then drag the small blue circle through the text.

If you’re working with a new document that doesn’t have any text yet, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 3: At the top of the screen, you’ll find the Format icon. On Android, it looks like an uppercase ‘A’ with four lines, and on iPhone, it appears as an uppercase underlined ‘A’.

Step 4: In the formatting tools that appear at the bottom, tap Paragraph.

Step 5: Look for Line spacing and tap the up-pointing Arrow on the far right until it reaches 2 or 2.00.

To close the formatting tools at the bottom, you can either select a spot in your document or tap the Format button.

You can always choose a different line spacing option later if needed by following the same process.

Now that you know how to double-space in Google Docs, why not discover other helpful features like applying strikethrough or selecting multiple portions of text?
