How to Record Your Screen on Windows using Xbox Game Bar

  1. Select the Start button, followed by the Gear icon located in the Start Menu.

  3. The Xbox Game Bar section should load by default. There’s a toggle under the second paragraph that should be set to On. If it’s Off, select the toggle.

  4. Select Captures listed on the left to view and adjust further customization options if needed. Under Captures, you can change the save location, enable background recording, and more.

  5. When you’re ready to record, type the default keyboard shortcut to open the Xbox Game Bar: Win + G. You may see a prompt asking if the highlighted application on your screen is a game. Select Yes to proceed.

  6. The Xbox Game Bar will appear near the top-center of your screen. It provides buttons to access overlays and settings such as Widget Menu, Audio, Capture, and more. Select the round Start Recording button on the Capture overlay to begin recording. To stop, select the Stop Recording button.

  7. All captured videos are saved as MP4 files in the Videos > Captures folder under This PC in File Explorer.

How to Record Your Screen on Windows using PowerPoint

Recording your screen with PowerPoint is relatively easy, but it requires Microsoft’s desktop software and a Microsoft 365 subscription (not available with the online-only version).

  4. To save the recording, right-click on the video displayed within PowerPoint and select the Save Media As option. Follow the prompts to save your recording.

How to Record Your Screen on a Mac using the Screenshot Tool

MacOS Ventura includes a native feature that allows you to record the screen and take screenshots. Here’s how:

  1. Press Shift + Command + 5 to bring up the screenshot toolbar.

  2. The toolbar displays buttons for capturing screenshots and recording the screen. Select the Record entire screen button or the Record selected portion button, followed by the Record button on the right.

How to Record Your Screen on a Mac using QuickTime Player

If you’re running a version of MacOS older than Mojave, you can use QuickTime Player for basic screen recording. Here’s how:

  1. Open QuickTime Player from the Launchpad. If you don’t see it, check the Launchpad’s Other folder.

How to Record Your Screen on a Chromebook

Google offers a native screen recording tool for Chrome OS. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Log in to Chrome OS. Press Shift + Ctrl + the Show windows button (box with lines) simultaneously.

  2. Click the Screen capture button on the pop-up menu.

  6. To finish recording, choose the Stop screen recording button displayed on the Shelf next to the system clock.

By default, the captured video saves to the Downloads folder as “Screen recording [date][time].webm”.

Multiplatform Option: Chrome Extension – Screencastify

If you prefer a Chrome extension that works across platforms, Screencastify is a great choice. Here’s how to install and use it:

  1. Open the Screencastify listing in the Chrome Web Store and select the Add to Chrome button, followed by Add extension in the pop-up window.

  2. Find the Screencastify icon next to the address bar. If it’s not there, click the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) and pin the Screencastify extension.

  3. Sign in with your Google account and follow the prompts to create a Screencastify account.

  4. Click the Screencastify icon again. A drop-down menu will appear.

  5. Select a source: Browser tab, Desktop, or Webcam only.

  6. Enable the microphone and/or webcam if needed.

  7. Choose Show more options for additional settings.

  8. Click the blue Record button to start recording. Note that the free account limits recordings to 30 minutes.

  9. To stop recording, click the pink and white End recording button in the bottom-left corner of the screen.

  10. The recorded video will open in a new tab. You can edit, share, or download it as needed. The video is saved to your Google Drive by default.
