How to Enjoy Fortnite on Your Mac

Fortnite is an incredibly popular online video game that can be played on various operating systems. While Macs have previously been known for their less-than-ideal gaming experience, the newest versions of MacOS have made Fortnite much more Apple-friendly. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of playing Fortnite on your Mac, so you can become a pro in no time.

Start Your Fortnite Adventure on a Mac

To download Fortnite on your Mac, simply visit the Epic Games site and start the download process from your Mac. Click on the Download button in the top-right corner, and choose the PC/Mac download option.

If you already have an account, log in. If not, create a new profile. Once you’ve completed this step, the EpicInstaller file will be downloaded. Launch the file, drag the Epic Games Launcher icon to your Applications folder, and confirm opening the Launcher when prompted by your Mac. The download will then commence.

Next, sign in to the Epic Games Launcher using your account details. Select the green Install button. When prompted to choose a location to save Fortnite, it’s best to stick with the default option. Make sure to keep the Auto-Update option selected, so your game stays up-to-date. Once the download is complete, click Launch to start playing.

System Requirements for Optimal Fortnite Experience

Before diving into the game, it’s important to know the specifications required to run Fortnite smoothly on your Mac. Epic provides both minimum and recommended requirements for optimal performance. If you’re on a budget or have an older Mac, these are the minimum requirements:

  • Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics
  • Core i3-3225 3.3 GHz processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 or newer
  • A Mac compatible with Apple’s Metal API

For the best gaming experience, aim for the recommended settings, which include:

  • AMD Radeon HD 7870 (or equivalent DX11 GPU)
  • Core i5-7300U 3.5GHz processor
  • 2GB VRAM
  • 8GB of RAM
  • MacOS Mojave 10.14.6

Fine-Tune Your Fortnite Settings

When you launch the game, Fortnite will automatically detect your hardware and provide recommended settings. While this is a good starting point, you may want to adjust various in-game settings to improve graphics quality and performance. It’s essential to find the right balance that works for your Mac. Here are a few settings to consider:

  • Display resolution: Although modern Macs have high-resolution Retina displays, opting for a 1080p resolution can improve frame rates. Aim for a minimum of 30 frames per second for an enjoyable experience.
  • Quality presets: Start with the Low preset to maximize frame rates. If your Mac handles Low settings well, gradually increase to Medium, and then further if possible.
  • Vsync: Turning on Vsync reduces screen tearing, but it may affect performance. If necessary, disable Vsync to boost FPS.

Keep in mind that game quality can change over time due to updates and patches. While Fortnite’s performance on Macs has significantly improved, occasional bugs or crashes may arise. These issues are often resolved with subsequent updates, so be patient or consider rolling back to a previous version.

Recommended Mac Models for Fortnite

To enjoy Fortnite on a Mac laptop, it’s crucial to have recent specs for smooth gameplay. We highly recommend using a MacBook Pro released in 2016 or later. The 15-inch or 16-inch models, particularly those with discrete GPUs, provide the best performance. Integrated GPUs found in other Mac laptops may not deliver the same level of smoothness.

If you prefer a Mac desktop, an iMac with a discrete graphics option is suitable for Fortnite. Integrated Intel graphics do not perform well in games, regardless of the iMac’s visual appeal. For optimal results, choose an iMac model released in 2017 or later. The Mac mini, which lacks discrete graphics, can also be used with an external GPU for significant improvements.

Here at Digital Trends, we tested Fortnite on a 5K 27-inch iMac with a Radeon Pro 580x graphics card. The results were around 60 fps and upper-70s on Epic and High settings, respectively.

It’s important to note that Metal Support is required to run Fortnite on a Mac. Metal technology ensures efficient coordination between a Mac’s GPU and CPU, which is essential for smooth gameplay. If your Mac has been regularly updated, it should have the necessary Metal capabilities. MacBooks made after 2015, MacBook Pros since 2012, and certain iMac models from 2012 onwards all possess Metal support.

If you’re eager to join the Fortnite community, make sure your Mac is equipped with Metal.
