How to Give Games as Gifts on Steam

If you’re searching for the perfect gift for a fellow gamer, gifting a game on Steam is an excellent choice. In the past, sending games was a breeze as long as you had an email address. However, nowadays, you can only give games to Steam members who are on your friend list.

How to Gift a New Game on Steam

In the past, you could send games to anyone with an email address. The message would include instructions on how to set up a Steam account and download the newly purchased game. However, things have changed. Now, you can only gift new games to people who already have a Steam account and are on your friend list.

Step 1: Ensure that your friend has a Steam account.

Step 2: If you want to buy a game for someone who doesn’t have a Steam account, they’ll need to create a new account and download the Steam client.

Step 3: Once they’ve set up their account, go to the Friends drop-down menu. Select “Add a Friend” and search for their username.

Step 4: Invite them to become your friend. After they accept your request, you can send them a game.

Step 5: Find the game you want to give in the Steam store, either in the client or through the web portal. Select “Add to Cart”. If you already own the game on your account, you’ll see a note above the buy option that says “Buy this game as a gift for a friend.”

Step 6: Choose “Purchase as a gift.”

If you already own the game, the “Purchase for myself” option will be faded and unresponsive because you can’t have multiple copies of the same game.

How to Gift a Duplicate Game on Steam

Valve recently changed Steam’s gifting policy to crack down on key resellers and pricing loopholes. As a result, you can no longer purchase and hold onto game codes indefinitely. However, any remaining codes can still be given out as before.

Step 1: In the Steam client, go to the Games tab and select “Manage Gifts and Guest Passes.”

Please note that you can only find this option in the Steam client software. Make sure you have it installed first.

Step 3: Select the game and look to the right for the “Send Gift” button.

If you’re sending the game to a friend on your friend list, you can transfer the game to them with just one click. Alternatively, you can enter their email on the following page and send it through that process.

Give a Steam Wallet Code

You can give a Steam Wallet Code to anyone who has been on your Steam friend list for at least three days.

Step 1: Purchase a Steam Gift Card with denominations of $5, $10, $25, $50, or $100. Choose the specific amount you wish to offer.

Step 2: Select the friend on your list to whom you want to send the gift card.

Step 3: Complete the purchase.

Once your friend receives and opens the gift, the money will appear in their Steam Wallet, ready to use.
