Even if you stumble upon a Soul Coin, understanding its nature and usage can be perplexing. The description provided is not particularly helpful, with only a vague mention of Strange, incomprehensible whispers that provoke emotions of rage and despair. However, these coins have significant value and play a crucial role in Karlach’s journey and her Infernal Engine.

In the lore of Baldur’s Gate 3, Soul Coins are the currency of Avernus, the game’s version of hell. While you won’t be using them for shopping, they are essential for Karlach and her Infernal Engine. By giving Karlach the coins and allowing her to use them, you can activate her Infernal Fury. While in this state, whenever she is in Rage or her HP drops below 25%, all her melee attacks will deal an additional 1-4 fire damage.
