How to Pause or Remove Your Instagram Account

If you’re feeling a bit weary of Instagram, you might want to take a break by deactivating your account. Instagram provides two options: you can either deactivate your account temporarily or delete it permanently. We’ll walk you through both choices so that you can decide whether you’d like to step away for a while or bid farewell to Instagram forever. It’s important to note that deleting your Instagram account will erase all of your content permanently, and there’s no way to recover it later on.

Temporarily Disable Your Instagram Account

By temporarily disabling your Instagram account, you can keep your profile, pictures, likes, and comments hidden until you choose to reactivate your account. Disabling your account is an ideal way to take a vacation from Instagram. Alternatively, you can consider muting a few friends if that’s your main reason for taking a break.

Please bear in mind that the instructions below are specifically for Instagram accounts not linked to a Facebook account. If your Instagram account uses Facebook to log in, you’ll need to unlink your Facebook account from your Instagram account and reset your Instagram password. To successfully do this, you’ll need access to the email account associated with your Instagram account. Once you’ve unlinked your Facebook account and reset your Instagram password, you can follow the steps below to temporarily disable your Instagram account.

Note: The instructions provided below are based on the latest version of Instagram’s user interface. However, please be aware that these steps may not work for everyone or in every instance. While we have confirmed the accuracy of these steps, it remains unclear whether this method truly deactivates an Instagram account or simply logs you out. Even Instagram’s own Help Center article acknowledges that this method may not work “at this time.”

The Instagram mobile app also allows users to disable their accounts using a similar Accounts Center method, akin to steps 1-9. While both the Android and iOS versions of Instagram may have slight variations in their procedures, the following steps should generally apply to both platforms.

On the Instagram mobile app, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Instagram app.
  2. Tap on your Profile picture (located at the bottom right of the screen).
  3. Tap on the Three horizontal lines menu icon.
  4. Go to Settings and privacy.

From there, select the account you want to deactivate, click Deactivate account, and then continue with the subsequent prompts. Enter your password when prompted, choose a reason for deactivation, and finalize the process by selecting Deactivate account.

Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

If you’re absolutely certain that you won’t be returning to Instagram, you have the option to permanently delete your account. It’s important to note that deleting your account will erase your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers. There is no way to recover them once this deletion process is complete. Additionally, if another user claims your previous username before you decide to sign up again, you won’t be able to use it anymore.

According to Instagram’s help guide, there are two ways to delete your account: you can either follow the steps outlined above for deactivating your account and choose the “delete account” option instead of “deactivate,” or you can follow the alternative method we’ve provided below.

If you’re certain about deleting your account, follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit the Instagram Delete Your Account page. If you’re not already logged in, sign in to your Instagram account.

Step 2: Next to “Why do you want to delete [your username]?”, choose an option from the drop-down box.

Step 3: Enter your Instagram password to confirm.

Step 4: Click Delete [Your Username].

By following the above process, you will have submitted a deletion request to the Instagram team. After 30 days, Instagram will permanently delete your account and all associated information. Instagram mentions that it may take up to 90 days for the process to be fully completed.

Step 5: As with disabling an account, you can also delete your account using the Instagram mobile app.

Wrapping Up

It’s worth noting that according to Instagram’s help guide, the instructions for Android can also work for iOS, although certain steps might vary slightly.

Rest assured that these procedures will enable you to either take a break from Instagram or permanently remove your account. Remember to carefully consider your decision before proceeding, as both options have long-term implications.
