How to Play Elden Ring with Friends

Every Souls game has placed players in the underdog position, outnumbered and outmatched in every encounter. Elden Ring, the latest game from this esteemed developer, is no exception. While you have an entire open world to explore, the challenges that await are just as brutal as in prior games. Thankfully, there are ways to play with friends and alleviate some of the difficulty. Whether you want to cooperate or compete, here’s a comprehensive breakdown on how to enjoy Elden Ring with your friends.

How to Enable Multiplayer

Before diving into the specifics, it’s essential to ensure that your settings allow for online play. Although Elden Ring prompts you to check these settings when you start the game, it doesn’t hurt to double-check. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open the options menu and navigate to the System section.
  2. In the Network settings, make sure the Launch Setting is set to Play Online.
  3. Alternatively, you can press Triangle or Y to reset all settings to default, ensuring you’re ready for online play.

Acquiring Multiplayer Items

You can’t play with friends right from the start of Elden Ring. You’ll need to progress a little further into the game to obtain the necessary items for various online actions. These items include:

  • Finger Severer: Use this to send any co-op partner back to their world.
  • Furcalling Finger Remedy: Enables you to see yellow summon signs left by other players and call them in as partners. Red summon signs summon fighters.
  • Tarnished’s Furled Finger: Lay down your summon sign for other players to call you into their worlds for assistance.
  • Duelist’s Furled Finger: Similar to the Tarnished’s Furled Finger, but you join as an opponent against the host.
  • Bloody Finger: Invade another player’s world and attempt to defeat the host.
  • Blue Cipher Ring: Activate this ring to automatically be summoned to a player’s world, providing aid if they get invaded.
  • White Cipher Ring: When activated, this ring calls upon anyone using the Blue Cipher Ring to assist you if you get invaded.
  • Small Red Effigy: Place this summon sign in an area’s pool for broader accessibility.
  • Small Golden Effigy: Similar to the red effigy, but for cooperative play.

How to Play with Friends

There are two methods to play with friends in Elden Ring, but one is significantly easier than the other. The more challenging approach involves using the co-op items mentioned before and hoping your friend finds and activates them first. However, there is a foolproof way to ensure a fast and seamless connection with your friend. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Options menu.
  2. Navigate to System and then Network.
  3. Change the Display Player Names option to Online ID.
  4. Enter the Multiplayer menu.
  5. Select a multiplayer password that you and your friend both know.
  6. In the game, travel to the same region as your co-op partner.
  7. Use Tarnished’s Furled Finger to create a co-op summon sign in that region’s pool.
  8. Your friend should select your summon sign from the pool. Without the password, no one else can access it.
  9. Wait for your friend to appear in your world and team up against the challenges that lie ahead.

This method also works if you want to fight against your friends. Simply replace the use of Tarnished’s Furled Finger with Duelist’s Furled Finger.
