Is there anything more frustrating than having to deal with an irritating villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Perhaps not, but maybe you’re at the point where you just can’t stand one of them anymore and want to kick them off your island. So how exactly do you go about removing them?
The Randomness of Villager Departure
Unfortunately, there isn’t a foolproof method that guarantees the dismissal of a villager from your island. It seems that whether a villager is thinking of moving out is somewhat random. While there are many theories out there claiming to work, a lot of them are simply false. For instance, some players believe that hitting a villager on the head with a net will make them angry and eventually leave. Others think that complaining to Isabelle in Residential Services will lead to a villager’s departure. Both of these methods, however, are untrue. That being said, there are a couple of techniques that appear to have some success.
The Telltale Cloud
You will know that a villager is ready to move out when they have a cloud above their head. After talking to them, they may mention that they’ve been considering moving out. If you agree, they will be gone in a few days. To expedite this process, you can try one of the following methods.
Method 1: Avoidance
Your villagers are usually found strolling around the island. In normal circumstances, you might feel inclined to approach them and strike up a conversation. However, if you want a villager to move out, it’s best to avoid interacting with them. Try not to initiate conversations and maintain your distance. Instead, focus on talking to the other villagers. Some players even construct fences around the homes of the unwanted villagers to avoid accidental encounters.
Interestingly, some villagers might express a desire to move out even if you talk to them every day. This leads many players to believe that the decision is indeed random. In any case, by ignoring them, you will eventually be prompted to remove a villager.
Method 2: Amiibo Cards
Alternatively, if you have Animal Crossing amiibo cards, you can utilize them to facilitate the departure of unwanted villagers. These cards can be found online or in blind packs. You can also purchase specific cards from eBay sellers. To use an amiibo card, head over to Residential Services and interact with the device. Select the “Amiibo” option and scan the card you have. Make sure it’s a villager and not a non-playable character like Tom Nook or Isabelle.
Once selected, the villager from the amiibo card will visit your island as a camper. Fulfill their requests and meet their needs while encouraging them to move in permanently. Eventually, they will accept your offer and move in the following day, provided you have available housing. Keep in mind that your island can only accommodate ten villagers at a time, so choose wisely.
If your island has reached its capacity, you will be asked to replace a villager with the character requested from the amiibo card. The good news is that you can negotiate which villager to boot out. A list of your current villagers will appear, allowing you to make the decision. This method also works with random campers, but it requires you to wait for their arrival. With amiibo cards, however, you have the freedom to bring in specific villagers whenever you want.
