Discord is an excellent platform for free voice and text chat, allowing you to connect with your gaming buddies. However, there may be instances when someone violates the community guidelines in the chat. In such cases, you might want to report the user to Discord for appropriate action. But reporting someone on Discord is not as straightforward as it may seem.
Reporting Users and Servers on Discord
If you encounter someone who is harassing, spamming, threatening, or engaging in abusive behavior in chat, there are steps you can take to report them to the moderators at Discord. In some cases, an entire server may be involved in harmful activities that go against the community guidelines. Here’s what you can do to alert the Discord moderators:
Check if the Message Violates Discord’s Guidelines
Before reporting someone, make sure their message falls within the categories that violate Discord’s community guidelines. Examples of unacceptable activities and messages include harassment, spam, IP rights violations, sharing child pornography, promoting suicide or self-harm, distributing viruses, threatening other users, and sharing violent or cruel images. If the message doesn’t fall into these categories, you can address the issue by discussing it with other members of the channel. As the server owner or a moderator, you even have the power to kick or ban the user, or simply block or mute them to avoid their content.
Please note: If the message is deleted after you report it, disciplinary action can still be taken. However, there is no way to report a message that has already been deleted.
Turn on Developer Mode, Find the Relevant ID Codes, and Send the Report
On the desktop app, Discord doesn’t have a simple “report” button. Instead, you need to find specific ID codes that Discord’s team can use to investigate the offending messages. Follow these steps to make a report on Discord:
Step 1: Click the Gear icon next to your name in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
Step 2: Select the Appearance tab.
Step 3: Scroll down to the Advanced section. You’ll find a toggle labeled Developer Mode. Turn it on.
Step 4: To obtain the necessary ID codes, right-click on the user’s name within the message in question.
Step 5: Choose Copy ID.
Step 6: Paste the copied number somewhere and label it as “user ID.” This ID remains the same even if the user changes their username.
Step 7: Right-click on the message itself and select Copy ID. This will provide you with an ID number for the message and channel. Paste it and label it as “message ID.”
Step 8: Right-click on the server icon located on the left side of your screen.
Step 9: Choose Copy ID once again and add it to the other two codes.
Step 10: Label this third code as “server ID.”
Step 11: Send your report.
With these steps, you can submit your report to Discord via its Trust & Safety request center. Enter your email address, select the appropriate report type, provide a subject, and describe the incident in detail, including all three ID codes. You can also consider attaching screenshots of the messages in the attachments section. Once you’ve completed the form, send the report and let Discord take care of the rest.
How to Report on iOS
Reporting a Discord user on iOS is a simpler process compared to the desktop version. All you need to do is press and hold the desired message, then tap “Report.” You don’t have to provide any specific reasoning or ID codes. Discord’s support team treats these reports with the same level of importance as others. In urgent cases where immediate attention is required and you don’t have access to a computer, you can send an email to [email protected]. Describe your situation in the email and include a link to the message by clicking “Copy Message Link” from the same menu.
How to Clear a Report from Discord
If there comes a time when you need to cancel a previous report, it’s best to send a direct message to the Discord Twitter page. Explain your situation and request that a team member delete your report. To make it easier for the Discord team, provide the email address associated with your account. Some reasons for retracting a report could include mistakenly reporting someone or realizing that the reported message doesn’t actually violate Discord’s community rules.
It’s important to note that filing false reports is against Discord’s terms of service. Only report someone if you are absolutely certain they are violating the guidelines; otherwise, you may face consequences. The Discord help team aims to respond to reports promptly and often resolves issues within minutes.
