How to Request a Refund from the PlayStation Store

If you’ve accidentally made a purchase on the PlayStation Store or find yourself regretting your decision, don’t worry! Our guide will walk you through the steps to obtain a refund from the PlayStation Store. Thankfully, for most of the content you buy through the PlayStation Network, you have the opportunity to rectify your actions. You can easily request a refund, which will be credited to your account and can be used for your next (hopefully more carefully considered) game purchase. For more details, you can refer to Sony’s official store cancellation policy.

Getting a Refund from the PlayStation Store

To request a refund for a purchase you made on the PlayStation Store, whether it’s a game, season pass, DLC, or PlayStation Video title, certain conditions must be met. The digital purchase must have been made within the last 14 days, and you should not have initiated the download on your PlayStation 4 or any other PlayStation device.

Pre-orders have a slightly different refund process. If you pre-ordered a game and change your mind, you can request a refund up until the day the game is released. This applies even if you pre-ordered the content months in advance. If you pre-ordered a game within 14 days before its release, you have a window of 14 days to cancel the pre-order and obtain a refund. So, for instance, if you pre-ordered a game a week before it launched, you have a week after the release to request a refund.

Initiating the Refund Process:

  1. Start by visiting the official PlayStation support website and choose to chat with a Sony representative.
  2. On the page that appears, select the Sony Account Help option.
  3. Ignore the options related to your account or billing and instead click on the Contact Us tab.
  4. Fill in your first name, along with your PSN ID and the email address used to create your account.
  5. After entering these details, you will be connected with a representative.
  6. Provide the Sony specialist with the title of the purchased item for which you are seeking a refund. Once you’ve shared this information, you should expect to receive the full cost of the title as funds added to your PlayStation Store wallet within one or two days.

Exceptions and Considerations

It’s important to note that unlike Steam’s refund policy, you cannot receive a refund for a PlayStation Store game simply because you didn’t enjoy it. Even if you’ve only started downloading the game and have not played it or fully installed it, it is no longer eligible for a refund. The only exception to this rule is if the content is genuinely defective and you can provide proof to the representative. In such cases, you will still be able to obtain your refund.

One drawback to receiving a refund from the PlayStation Store is that the money can only be credited to your account balance, regardless of whether you originally used a credit card for the purchase. This is because the funds are technically added to your wallet and then used for future purchases, meaning you cannot have the refund issued directly to your card.
