How to Respec in Elden Ring

Respecing plays a significant role in the Souls series, and luckily, Elden Ring allows you to respec your character early on. For those unfamiliar with respecing, it involves reallocating your stat points. Essentially, you can reclaim all your stat points and distribute them however you desire. So, if you’ve been investing in strength and dexterity but want to give magic a try, respecing enables you to shift those points into mind, faith, and intelligence. But how exactly do you respec in Elden Ring? What materials are required? And is there a limit to the number of times you can respec your character?

How to Respec in Elden Ring

Imagine discovering all these incredible magic weapons, only to realize that you lack the necessary stats to wield them. Don’t fret! You can respec your character in Elden Ring to handle powerful magic weapons like the Crystal Sword, or opt for dexterity weapons like the Sacred Butcher’s Knife. While the ability to respec comes early in the game (following the most logical path to progress the main story), it doesn’t come without its challenges. You’ll find yourself battling dragons, navigating treacherous swamp water, and defeating Elden Ring’s version of the Deacons of the Deep before you can even consider respecing your character.

To begin the respec process, follow these steps:

Step 1: Reach Raya Lucaria’s Academy in the middle of Liurnia Lake

To gain access to Raya Lucaria’s Academy, you’ll need to acquire the Academy Glinstone Key, which is guarded by a dragon on an island in the lake. Look for the island directly west of Raya Lucaria’s Academy on the map. You don’t have to slay the dragon to retrieve the key. Once you provoke the beast, ride up to the spot where it was resting and collect the items, including the Glinstone Key.

Step 2: Make your way through the Academy

Fight your way through the Academy, taking on masked mages and an aggressive sentient jar warrior. Eventually, you’ll encounter a mandatory boss fight that you must overcome to progress further into the Academy. Fans of Dark Souls may find the Red Wolf of Radagon reminiscent of past boss battles.

Step 3: Keep pushing forward after defeating the Red Wolf

After besting the Red Wolf, continue your ascent. Scale the curved staircase, dodge the perilous giant death balls, and conquer the scripted NPC invasion at the top of the stairs. Beware, as this NPC possesses incredibly accurate parrying skills. You can exploit the situation by enticing them back out to the stairs, allowing the giant death balls to do their work effectively.

Step 4: Find the Renalla, Queen of the Full Moon boss fight

Ascend the lift located behind the NPC to encounter the boss fight against Renalla, Queen of the Full Moon. Overcome this formidable opponent and speak with her to initiate the respec process. Choose the rebirth option from the list of available choices.

How Many Times Can You Respec in Elden Ring?

In Elden Ring, you can respec your character an unlimited number of times, provided you possess Larval Tears to spend. These unique items are exceptionally rare, particularly during the early stages of the game. As such, players should exercise caution when respecing unless they have a clear plan in mind for completely reshaping their character. For instance, it’s not wise to utilize a Larval Tear to make minor adjustments to a single stat for the sole purpose of wielding a specific weapon. In such cases, it’s better to grind for runes instead.

When respecing, you must reallocate all your stats up to your current level. Furthermore, you cannot reduce any stats below their initial starting level. This is why many seasoned Souls players opt for the deprived class (known as the Wretch in Elden Ring). The Wretch begins at level one, while other classes start at level nine or ten. When the time comes to respec, the Wretch has the advantage of not being limited by their base stats, allowing for extra points to be reallocated.

Aside from respecing, Renalla also provides the option to alter your character’s appearance for free. If you wish to change your appearance, speak with her or visit Roundtable Hold. In the room adjacent to the blacksmith, you’ll find a mirror. It’s the same room where you’ll encounter a forlorn woman who could use a comforting embrace.

Where to Find Larval Tears in Elden Ring

Larval Tears are essential for respecing your character in Elden Ring. As already mentioned, they are incredibly rare, so it’s important not to waste them unless you’re absolutely certain about respecing. Here are a few locations where you can find Larval Tears:

  • In the graveyard within the Village of the Albinaurics. This area is situated south of the Academy, beyond the poison water, and perched high in the cliffs.
  • The nomadic merchant in the Siofra River sells one Larval Tear for 3,000 runes.
  • Nokron, the Eternal City, contains two corpses, each yielding a Larval Tear. One corpse is located inside a stone building, while the other can be found in a gazebo.
  • In the graveyard east of Caria Manor, a ghost possesses a Larval Tear. However, you must first defeat Royal Knight Loretta to access this area. Interact with the ghost sitting in the chair, and they will drop the tear, along with a few other items.
  • Larval Tears can be obtained by defeating Silver Tear enemies, which resemble Diddo, the Pokemon. These enemies disguise themselves as inanimate objects within Elden Ring and can be found in the Eternal City later in the game.
  • Pidia, a merchant in Caria Manor, sells Larval Tears. He can be found on a balcony above the Manor Lower-Level site of grace. To reach the balcony, you must drop down from the cliffs behind it, west of the Three Sisters. Refer to the provided map for the exact location.
