Risk of Rain 2, the looter-shooter from Hopoo Games, has been in early access for over a year. During this time, the developers have consistently introduced new characters to the game. Each character brings a unique playstyle, such as the Engineer who relies on turrets or Acrid who uses poisonous gas clouds. Currently, there are nine playable characters in the game, with a 10th on the way. In this guide, we’ll show you how to unlock all the characters in Risk of Rain 2.

Unlock condition: Unlocked automatically.
Commando is the character you start with in Risk of Rain 2. He may not be the most powerful, but he’s easy to control. Tactical Dive allows you to quickly move across the map, while Phase Round and Suppressive Fire help you deal with multiple enemies. Tactical Dive is especially useful for reaching different areas without taking fall damage.
Huntress

Unlock condition: Beat the first three levels.
To unlock Huntress, you need to complete the first three levels without dying. This may be challenging on normal or hard difficulty, but it’s easier if you play on easy or with friends. Huntress is an agile survivor, able to move swiftly on the battlefield. Her primary attacks, Strafe and Laser Glaive, allow her to hit enemies from a distance. Arrow Rain, her strongest ability, deals massive area-of-effect damage. You can combine it with her Blink ability to avoid fall damage if timed correctly.
MUL-T

Unlock condition: Beat the first level five times.
MUL-T is a versatile character that you can unlock by completing the first level five times. You can do this on easy difficulty or with friends on normal or hard difficulty. MUL-T’s primary attacks are Auto-Nailgun and Rebar Puncher, each useful in specific situations. The Transport Mode dash ability deals damage to enemies, while Blast Canister stuns large groups of enemies. Switching between MUL-T’s abilities and equipment is crucial for effective gameplay.
Engineer

Unlock condition: Beat 30 levels.
Engineer is another character you unlock naturally by beating a total of 30 levels. You can achieve this by playing on easy difficulty and reaching as many levels as possible, either alone or with friends. The Engineer is a defensive character who excels at placing turrets, shields, and mines. The TR12 Gauss Auto-Turret is the key ability, capable of dealing significant damage when combined with your items. The Engineer’s Bubble Shield allows outgoing projectiles while blocking incoming ones, and Pressure Mines deal area-of-effect damage.
Artificer

Unlock condition: Spend 10 Lunar Coins to free the prisoner.
To unlock the Artificer, you need to collect 10 Lunar Coins. Pay attention to collecting Lunar Coins while unlocking other characters. Take them to the Bazaar Between Time, accessible in every stage. Use a Lunar Coin at a Newt Altar to open the portal to the Bazaar. Inside, find the crystal next to a giant newt labeled “free the survivor” and spend your coins to unlock the Artificer. The Artificer lacks dodge abilities but hovers in the air with the ENV Suit. Flame Bolt is the primary attack, and Snapfreeze and Flamethrower provide additional damage and crowd control. Charged Nano-Bomb deals massive area-of-effect stun damage.
Mercenary

Unlock condition: Reach “A Moment, Fractured” and use the Obelisk.
To unlock the Mercenary, reach the “A Moment, Fractured” environment through the Celestial Portal. After beating the fourth stage, you’ll loop back to the first stage, but with higher item costs. Open the Celestial Portal on the third stage, either Rallypoint Delta or Scorched Acres. Activate the teleporter, defeat the environment boss, and enter the Celestial Portal instead of using the teleporter. Inside “A Moment, Fractured,” find the Obelisk to unlock the Mercenary. The Mercenary wields a sword, and their skills focus on agility and close-range combat. You can chain attacks while sprinting, jumping, or using non-primary skills.
Rex

Unlock condition: Bring your Fuel Array to Rex in the Abyssal Depths.
Unlocking Rex requires you to bring a Fuel Array to Rex in the Abyssal Depths, a fourth-stage environment. However, carrying the Fuel Array comes with a risk. If your health drops below 50%, it will explode and kill you. Pick up the Fuel Array at the back of your escape pod in the first environment. Travel to the Abyssal Depths with the Fuel Array and find Rex to complete the unlock. Rex is a combination of a robot and a plant, using HP to cast skills. Use Seed Barrage and Bramble Volley to deal damage, and Natural Toxins to weaken enemies.
Loader

Unlock condition: Defeat the secret boss in Siren’s Call.
To unlock the Loader, head to Siren’s Call, a fourth-stage environment. Destroy the eggs scattered around the map until you hear a distinct sound. Keep destroying eggs until the sound grows louder, indicating the presence of the Alloy Worship Unit boss. Defeat the boss to unlock the Loader. The Loader is a powerful character with slow but heavy-hitting attacks. Use Charged Gauntlet and Knuckleboom for massive damage, Scrap Barrier for invincibility against fall damage, and Grapple Fist for quick repositioning.
Acrid

Unlock condition: Activate nine Void Cells in the Void Fields.
Unlocking Acrid is the most challenging task. To find the Void Fields, first, go to the Bazaar Between Time (refer to the Artificer entry). At the end of the seemingly bottomless pit in the Bazaar, you’ll find a portal to the Void Fields. In the Void Fields, activate nine Void Cells while defending yourself from enemies. This task may take several attempts. Once you complete the challenge, you’ll unlock Acrid. Acrid’s main Poison attack weakens enemies, and Vicious Wounds deals bonus damage. Caustic Leap allows quick movement and AoE damage, while Charged Nano-Bomb provides massive stun damage.
