How to Use AirPlay Without Wi-Fi

For Apple device users, AirPlay is a game-changer. It instantly transforms your Smart TV into a mirror screen of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices. Picture this: you have amazing videos or pictures on your phone that you want to show others. AirPlay comes in handy in this case.

Contrary to popular belief, many iPhone or iPad users think that a stable Wi-Fi connection is required to mirror the screen via AirPlay. But the truth is, you can use AirPlay without a stable Wi-Fi connection. It’s a great option for those who don’t want to use data or don’t have Wi-Fi access where they are.

What is AirPlay?

AirPlay

AirPlay is a proprietary wireless communication Protocol suite originally launched by Apple in 2004 for iTunes. However, after the 2018 updates, it became applicable to all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

With AirPlay, you can stream content to a smart TV using your Apple device. You can connect your phone or Apple device to the smart TV, and the TV will become an extension of your iPhone or iPad. This means you can stream audio and video files such as movies, shows, and documentaries using this wireless technology.

Pros and Cons of AirPlay

Like any other technology, AirPlay has its pros and cons. Let’s take a look at the pros:

  • AirPlay offers video streaming, allowing you to stream entire movies by mirroring your iPhone screen.
  • It works with and without Wi-Fi, so you can mirror your Apple device’s screen even without an internet connection.
  • The picture and audio quality remain top-notch when using AirPlay.
  • You can stream content on multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Your Apple device can be used as a remote control for your smart TV.
  • You can continue streaming content using your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook.
  • AirPlay provides detailed information about the content you are watching.
  • AirPlay doesn’t affect the system’s performance.

On the other hand, here are the cons:

  • AirPlay is limited to Apple devices. It is not compatible with Android devices, and a high-speed Wi-Fi connection is required.
  • The stability of the Wi-Fi network affects AirPlay’s performance. If the internet goes down, AirPlay may get disconnected.
  • Different devices streaming through AirPlay cannot access different content simultaneously, as they all stream the same content.
  • Video sharing is restricted to Apple TV only.
  • You can use only one app at a time when using AirPlay.

How Does AirPlay Work?

AirPlay uses a local wireless or wired network to connect your Apple devices. However, it doesn’t necessarily require a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection.

To use AirPlay, you need to connect your smart TV with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Then, connect your Apple device to the same network and start streaming.

You can establish a peer-to-peer connection between your Apple TV and other Apple devices for AirPlay streaming. Alternatively, you can use Apple AirPort Express, a small portable wireless router for Apple devices.

How to Enable AirPlay to Apple TV without Wi-Fi?

1. Using Peer-to-Peer Mirroring

Peer-to-peer mirroring allows you to connect an Apple device with an Apple TV. In this method, your phone, iPad, or Mac device functions as a temporary Wi-Fi hotspot. If your other Apple device has available Wi-Fi, you don’t need an additional Wi-Fi connection.

2. Peer-to-Peer AirPlay Requirements

Before establishing a peer-to-peer AirPlay connection, ensure your devices meet these requirements:

  • Your iPhone or iPad should have iOS 8 or later versions. If you’re using a MacBook, ensure it has OS X Yosemite v10.10 or a later version.
  • The Apple TV must have tvOS 7.0 or later versions. At least a third-generation Rev A model or fourth-generation Apple TV is required.

3. How to Set Up Peer-to-Peer AirPlay

Follow these steps to connect your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook with your Apple TV:

  1. Delete all saved networks on your iOS smart TV or Apple TV.
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iOS device and Apple TV.
  3. Restart both devices.
  4. Now, AirPlay will support iOS devices or Mac devices.
  5. Open your device’s “Control Centre” and click on AirPlay to link.
  6. Enter the four-digit passcode of your iOS device and wait for it to appear on your Apple TV.
  7. Wait a few minutes for a notification pop-up confirming the completion of the peer-to-peer AirPlay connection.

4. Troubleshooting Peer-to-Peer AirPlay

If you’re experiencing issues with peer-to-peer AirPlay, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your smart TV and iOS device.
  2. Restart your Apple TV.
  3. Access the control panel of your Apple TV and tap on mirroring from your iOS device.
  4. Check the Apple TV model number under Settings > General > About.
  5. Disconnect your iPad or iPhone from the Wi-Fi network.
  6. Enable Bluetooth or Wi-Fi after the peer-to-peer connection is activated on the Apple TV.

5. Disabling Peer-to-Peer AirPlay

To disable peer-to-peer AirPlay, follow these steps:

  1. Open “Settings” and navigate to “General.”
  2. Open Bluetooth and turn it off if it’s on.
  3. Enable “Require Device Verification” on all your Apple devices and Apple TVs.
  4. Enter the passcode to activate AirPlay.

6. Using Apple Lightning Connector with HDMI

If you don’t want to rely on peer-to-peer connectivity, you can cast the screen of your Apple phone or iOS device using an HDMI cable. Simply connect the lightning connector on your Apple device and use a lightning digital AV adapter with an HDMI cable. Now you’re ready to stream content.

7. Using Google Chromecast

Google Chromecast is another method you can use to stream content or mirror the screen of your iOS device to your Apple TV. It works seamlessly, allowing you to stream videos, movies, live shows, and even music with Chromecast.

Just connect Chromecast to your Apple TV using an HDMI cable. Make sure your macOS is v10.9 or later for this technique to work.
