How to Use Stable Diffusion for Amazing AI-Generated Art

Stable Diffusion has become a popular and exciting AI generative art tool that can transform simple text prompts into incredible images. While there has been some controversy surrounding its sources of inspiration, it has proven to be a valuable resource for creating character model art for RPGs, stunning wall art for those on a budget, and captivating concept art that sparks inspiration for writers and other creative pursuits.

If you’re eager to explore the possibilities of Stable Diffusion on your PC, this guide will walk you through the process of getting started. Apple fan? Don’t worry, we also have a guide on running Stable Diffusion specifically for Mac users.

Running Stable Diffusion on your PC

You can easily utilize Stable Diffusion online by visiting various web services such as StableDiffusionWeb. However, running Stable Diffusion on your own PC allows you to skip the queues and generate images at your desired pace. Let’s dive into the steps of running Stable Diffusion on your PC:

Step 1: Download Python

Begin by downloading the latest version of Python from the official website. At the time of writing, the most recent version is Python 3.10.10. Visit the website, find the file links at the bottom of the page, and select the Windows Installer (64-bit) version. Once the download is complete, install Python as you would with any other application.

Note: Your web browser might flag the file as potentially dangerous. As long as you download from the official website, you can safely ignore this warning.

Step 2: Download Git for Windows

Next, download the latest version of Git for Windows from the official website. Install it using the default settings. You may also need to add Python to the PATH variable, and you can learn how to do this by following the instructions provided by Educative.io.

Step 3: Download the Stable Diffusion Project File

Step 4: Download the Checkpoint File

Now, visit the AI company Hugging Face’s website and download the checkpoint file called “768-v-ema.ckpt.” This file might take some time to download due to its size. Once the download is complete, extract the file into the “stable-diffusion-webui/models/Stable-diffusion” folder. You’ll know you’ve found the right file when you see a text file named “Put Stable Diffusion checkpoints here.”

Step 5: Download the Config YAML File

Download the config yaml file (right-click the page and select “Save as”). Copy and paste this file into the same location as the previously downloaded checkpoint file. Rename it to “768-v-ema.ckpt” and remove the .txt file extension.

Step 6: Run the Web User Interface

Navigate back to the stable-diffusion-webui folder and run the webui-user.bat file. This will initiate the installation of all the necessary dependencies. While this process may take some time, even on fast computers with high-speed internet, you can monitor its progress in real-time, as it’s extensively documented.

Step 7: Access the Stable Diffusion Web Interface

After the installation is complete, you should see a Command Prompt window similar to the one shown above. At the end of the displayed message, you’ll find a URL such as “http://127.0.0.1:7860“. Copy and paste this URL into your preferred web browser to access the Stable Diffusion web interface.
