AI image generation is rapidly gaining popularity on the internet, and you may be interested in using apps like Stable Diffusion on your Mac. Stable Diffusion allows you to easily create AI images on your Mac with some simple steps. If you’re aiming to create the most unique and stunning AI art, you might have been disappointed by the additional requirements of apps like Midjourney or Dall-E, such as the need for a Discord account. Thankfully, Stable Diffusion offers a much simpler setup. Here’s a guide on how to get started.
Downloading Stable Diffusion on Your Mac
Step 1: Before you begin, make sure your Mac supports Stable Diffusion. There are two important components to consider. Firstly, you’ll need an M1 or M2 Mac for the download to work. Older Macs are not compatible with the app. If you have an older Mac, don’t worry. We’ll explore some alternatives later on. Secondly, ensure that you have updated your Mac to the latest version of macOS Monterey. Stable Diffusion requires recent download options and may not function properly with older macOS versions.
Step 2: Visit the DiffusionBee website and locate the “Download for macOS” button. Click on it to start the download.
Step 3: Once the download is complete, open the installer and transfer DiffusionBee to your Applications folder to complete the installation. Afterward, open DiffusionBee.
Step 4: Within the app, you’ll notice that you’re on the “Text to image” tab, which is where you can generate typical AI images (the other tabs may have some technical issues for now). Just below, you’ll find a text box where you can input instructions for generating the AI image.
Step 5: Type your image description as you would tags, using commas to separate key phrases. Begin with a detailed description of the desired image, listing the most important subjects and descriptors first. Then, include any attributes you want the image to possess, such as a specific painting or photo style, level of detail, lighting details, and more. You can also provide sources of direct inspiration for the AI to draw from, such as a TV show or a specific painter or landscape.
Step 6: In the “Advanced options” section, you’ll find additional settings to adjust the image size and other important parameters. Once you have made all the necessary adjustments, select “Generate.”
Step 7: If the generation process does not succeed, try again a few times. The AI may need a couple of attempts to fully generate an image for you. Once an image is successfully generated, you can choose to copy it or select “Save image” to download it.
Alternative 1: Using a Web App
If your Mac cannot run DiffusionBee, don’t worry. There are other options available to unlock Stable Diffusion’s AI image generation capabilities, and you may not even need to download anything. Here is one of our favorite alternatives:
Step 1: Visit the Hugging Face AI generator. Hugging Face utilizes Stable Diffusion to power its image generation, providing you with similar results to the download. While the options may not be as advanced, they are still excellent, and all you need is a dependable internet connection.
Step 2: Enter your prompt (advanced options are currently not available, so you can skip this section). When you’re ready, select “Generate image.”
Step 3: The AI will generate approximately four different images based on your prompt. If one of the images meets your requirements, you can select it for download or copying. You can also continue generating images until you find one you like.
Alternative 2: Using a Photoshop Plugin
Alternatively, if you frequently work with Photoshop, there’s an additional option for you to explore. Christian Cantrell has developed a plugin that integrates Stable Diffusion into Photoshop. You can find and download the plugin here.
The advantage of this approach is that you can harness your image generation powers directly within Photoshop without needing a separate app. Additionally, you’ll have access to all the advanced options supported by Stable Diffusion, and you can immediately utilize editing tools to make any desired adjustments to the image.
However, please note that this is a third-party app and still relatively new at the moment. It may introduce bugs or other difficulties. Make sure you have the latest version of Photoshop before downloading the plugin, and be prepared to disable it if any problems arise.
