How to Use Text-to-Speech Feature on Discord

Discord is the ultimate app for group conversations while engaging in various activities, such as gaming, movie-watching, or simply hanging out. One of the reasons why Discord stands out is its wide range of accessibility options, including the text-to-speech feature. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of using text-to-speech on Discord and explore some customizable settings.

Enabling Text-to-Speech on Discord

Discord comes with text-to-speech enabled by default, making it effortless to get started. However, you may need to adjust certain settings to personalize your text-to-speech experience. Let’s begin by ensuring that the text-to-speech feature is active.

Step 1: Launch Discord and click on the Settings button, which is represented by a gear icon located next to your avatar in the bottom-left corner.

Step 2: In the left menu under the App Settings tab, select Accessibility.

Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom of the page and toggle on the switch next to “Allow Playback and Usage of /tts Command”.

Additionally, you can adjust the text-to-speech rate according to your preferences. Although we recommend keeping it at the default setting, you have the freedom to speed up or slow down the speech rate. Before finalizing the changes, make sure to click on “Preview” to ensure that the text-to-speech feature is working exactly how you desire.

Utilizing Text-to-Speech on Discord

Once you have set up text-to-speech, you can start leveraging it to either send messages or have messages read aloud to you. However, it’s essential to note a slight difference between the Discord app and the browser version. The app offers its own distinct voice for text-to-speech, while the browser version uses the standard voice available in your browser.

Configuring Text-to-Speech Notifications on Discord

Using the aforementioned method, you can personalize text-to-speech for specific messages you send or receive. Moreover, Discord allows you to enable text-to-speech notifications, eliminating the need for the /tts command or any additional steps to have messages read aloud. Whenever someone posts a message in a channel, it will automatically be read to you.

Discord offers three options for text-to-speech notifications:

  • For all channels: This option activates text-to-speech for all messages in every channel you are a part of. However, it is advisable to keep this feature disabled to prevent excessive notifications. If you find it challenging to keep up with messages, consider leaving channels that are not essential to avoid an overwhelming influx of notifications.

  • For current selected channel: Enabling text-to-speech for the text channel you are currently browsing allows you to enjoy this feature exclusively within that particular channel. It is important to note that this setting only applies to the specific channel and not the entire server. Moreover, it does not require the use of the /tts command.

  • Never: Choosing this option disables text-to-speech notifications throughout all channels and servers. Even if someone utilizes the /tts command, you will not hear the message being read aloud.

While having all text-to-speech notifications activated may lead to an overwhelming amount of messages, it is crucial to abide by Discord’s community guidelines, which clearly prohibit any form of harassment. If you encounter an excessive number of text-to-speech notifications, refer to our guide on how to report someone on Discord for further assistance.

To access the notification settings:

Step 1: Click on the Settings icon in Discord, located in the lower-left corner of the window next to your avatar.

Step 2: Under the App Settings tab in the left menu, select Notifications.
