Are you ready to put your strength to the test? After a small leak and a couple of teases on Twitter, Mortal Kombat 1 has been confirmed as the next addition to the best-selling fighting game franchise of all time. Developer NetherRealm, known for their alternating game releases, surprised many by not announcing a new Injustice game, following the release of Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. Instead, they bring us Mortal Kombat 1, a soft reboot of the series. Join us as we delve into the bloody details of this much-anticipated game.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to hit the battleground on September 19, 2023. However, players who purchase either the Premium or Kollector’s Edition of the game will have the privilege of an early access period.

This fighter game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and surprisingly, even the Nintendo Switch. This move ensures that players on various platforms can get in on the action.

The announcement trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 follows the events of the story in Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath DLC. To simplify the storyline for newcomers, the game serves as both a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 and a soft reboot of the lore. The trailer features Fire God Liu Kang, who reset the entire timeline back to the beginning and now creates a “blank canvas” for people to choose whether to live in peace or in combat. It showcases iconic characters in their original forms, such as Raiden without his godly powers and the inevitable face-off between Scorpion and Subzero. However, a twist occurs when a portal opens, revealing the return of Shang Tsung who mercilessly attacks the entire cast, except for Liu Kang, who delivers a future Fatality to bring him down.

The Banished trailer from EVO 2023 sheds more light on the story of Mortal Kombat 1, introducing returning characters like Reptile, Ashrah, and Havik. While the plot is not extensively revealed, Liu Kang acknowledges the need to prepare all the warriors for war.

In the Gamescom trailer, it becomes evident that conflict arises once again in the universe due to the Outworlders. General Shao emerges as a prominent threat, opposing Liu Kang’s rule. Interestingly, Raiden is selected as Earth Realm’s champion for the Mortal Kombat tournament this time.

While no gameplay footage has been shown yet, Mortal Kombat 1 will undoubtedly stay true to its core as a fighting game. Players can expect a wide range of attacks, throws, special moves, Brutalities, and iconic Fatalities. These moves will require specific directional and button combinations to execute.

A notable addition confirmed by NetherRealm is the Kameo Fighter system, which introduces assist fighters. Similar to other fighting games, players will have the ability to select a secondary character who can assist them during a match. However, they won’t be able to directly control or swap between these characters.

Mortal Kombat games have always featured a variety of additional modes, such as the Tower of Time in Mortal Kombat 11. Although these modes haven’t been confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 yet, players can expect alternative ways to enjoy the game.
