Nvidia GTX 1660 Super vs. GTX 1660 Ti vs. GTX 1660

Although Nvidia’s RTX 3080 is undoubtedly impressive, it may not be the right choice for every gamer. For those playing at 1080p or interested in esports titles, the GTX 16-series cards offer solid performance at a more affordable price. With the addition of FSR support, they have become even more appealing. Among the GTX 1660 Super, GTX 1660 Ti, and GTX 1660, which one should you go for?

The Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti was the first card in Nvidia’s GTX 16-series lineup. It served as an entry-level alternative to the RTX graphics range and a replacement for the more modest GTX 10-series cards. While it lacked the higher CUDA core counts, RT and Tensor cores, and expansive feature sets of the RTX cards, it was based on the same Turing 12nm architecture. The GTX 1660, with fewer CUDA cores and slower memory, followed shortly after on March 14, 2019.

The Nvidia GTX 1660 Super, launched on October 29, 2019, was designed to bridge the gap between the two existing 1660 cards in terms of both price and performance.

All three cards are currently out of stock due to the ongoing GPU shortage. If you’re set on any variant of the GTX 1660, your best options are to contact local retailers like Micro Center and Best Buy or explore the secondhand market.

There aren’t significant differences in performance among the GTX 1660 cards, but some offer better value for money than others.

Originally, the GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti had noticeable distinctions, such as a 9% difference in CUDA cores and considerably faster memory on the Ti. On the other hand, the GTX 1660 Super serves as an alternative to the GTX 1660 Ti. It has a slightly higher TDP, clock speed, and faster memory. While it performs slightly below the 1660 Ti in raw performance, the difference is negligible, especially considering the significant price difference between them.

In certain games, the GTX 1660 Super outperforms the Ti and standard variants, especially at 1080p. However, the Ti version surpasses the Super in other games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and both cards perform similarly in Battlefield V. The standard GTX 1660 consistently performs lower than the Super and Ti variants, albeit by a small margin.

One of the significant differences between Nvidia’s GTX and RTX graphics cards is the presence of RT cores and Tensor cores in the latter. The RT cores enable ray tracing and deep learning super sampling acceleration. While the GTX 1660 cards can perform ray-tracing calculations, their general compute performance is not sufficient for playable ray tracing. Additionally, they lack Tensor cores, which means they can’t support DLSS (deep learning super sampling).

However, the GTX 1660 series can leverage Nvidia’s ultra-low-latency (NULL) technology for faster in-game response during competitive play. They also support all the post-processing effects introduced with Nvidia’s Reshade support.

With the introduction of the GTX 1660 Super, Nvidia made an intriguing move. This card offers noticeably improved performance over the standard GTX 1660 at a similar price point. As a result, we usually recommend the Super over the standard 1660. But what about the Ti?

Although the 1660 Ti is technically the most capable option among the three, the difference in performance is minimal. It can be easily mitigated by overclocking your CPU. Ultimately, we recommend the GTX 1660 Super to gamers, despite the slightly higher performance output of the Ti in certain titles.

Currently, due to stock shortages, it may be beneficial to seek out the 3060 Ti or wait for the launch of the newer 3060, while considering third-party benchmarks.

Please note that the current series of cards is the best AMD has to offer, as no other cards match the price point and quality of Nvidia’s GTX 1660 series. However, we anticipate that AMD will release cheaper cards based on the same architecture in 2021.
