Octopath Traveler 2 Review: An Enhanced Sequel with Lingering Challenges

Eight Paths, Eight Stories

Octopath Traveler 2 takes place in the industrialized setting of Solistia, setting it apart from its predecessor’s Osterra. This unique blend of modern technology and magical elements creates a captivating location. Like the original game, Octopath Traveler 2 follows eight distinct characters on their individual journeys. Each character has their own captivating story, such as Hikari, a swordsman on a mission to stop his brother’s warmongering rule, and Castti, an amnesiac apothecary seeking to recover her memories through travel and healing. Players have the freedom to choose which character to start with and can then tackle the chapters in any order.

Each story in Octopath Traveler 2 is intriguing and never overstays its welcome. Osvald’s tale, in particular, stands out as he seeks revenge for his family’s murder 20 years ago. Watching Osvald embark on a dark path for vengeance reveals the depths of his determination. Castti’s story uncovers harrowing details about her apothecary clan, leading her to question the value of her lost memories. Her altruistic approach as a healer clashes with her clan’s sinister secrets.

Unlockable Crossovers and Enhanced Banter

Octopath Traveler 2 addresses one of the main criticisms of its predecessor, which lacked substantial interactions between the characters. While the sequel still lacks complete integration, it offers unlockable crossover episodes between party members as the game progresses. These episodes provide tender moments between characters who would otherwise remain separate in their individual story arcs. For example, Hikari and Agnea, the dancer, bond over their shared love of music beneath the moonlit sky. These crossover episodes reveal the depth of these characters and the commonalities they share.

The banter conversations between characters, previously held in a mysterious black void, are now set against appropriate city backgrounds, making them feel more integrated into the world. Although lacking voice acting, these scenes contribute to the immersive storytelling of Octopath Traveler 2.

Engaging Battle Mechanics

Octopath Traveler 2’s standout feature is its fantastic turn-based battle system, which retains the core mechanics of its predecessor. The implementation of the BP (Boost Point) mechanic adds depth and engagement to every turn. Each character gains one BP at the end of every turn and can accumulate up to five. Spending BP allows characters to strike multiple times or enhance the power of their skills.

This battle system encourages strategic decision-making and adaptability. Depleting an enemy’s numerical shield by exploiting their elemental or weapon weaknesses immobilizes them and increases damage dealt. Balancing the use of BP to break shields and optimizing attacks within a limited timeframe creates exhilarating tension during encounters.

Artistic Excellence and Memorable Soundtrack

Octopath Traveler 2 shines with its captivating art style and mesmerizing soundtrack. The dynamic presentation of the bosses enhances their impact, giving even normal-sized adversaries a formidable presence. The game’s electrifying soundtrack further intensifies the combat experience. Additionally, the diverse settings across Solistia are highlighted by distinct tracks that correspond to the city’s unique characteristics.

Conclusion

Although Octopath Traveler 2 retains some of the challenges of its predecessor, it remains a substantial improvement. With its compelling stories, engaging battle system, and captivating art and music, it offers an experience that will captivate players for over 60 hours. OnSpec Electronic, Inc. has delivered a noteworthy sequel that signals a promising future for the series.
