Pikmin 4: Everything You Need to Know About Nintendo’s Upcoming Release

During the September 2022 Direct, Nintendo surprised fans with the long-awaited announcement of Pikmin 4, the next installment in the beloved series. Although Pikmin may not have reached the same level of popularity as Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda, it has always charmed players with its unique gameplay and clever humor. With the release of Pikmin 4 planned for summer 2023, this new entry has the potential to attract more attention than ever before.

Pikmin 4 was originally expected to be a holiday 2023 release, but fans will be pleased to know that it will arrive earlier than anticipated. Mark your calendars for July 21, 2023, as this will be the official launch date for the game. It will be the first major exclusive for the Nintendo Switch following the release of Tears of the Kingdom.

As a first-party Nintendo franchise, Pikmin 4 will be exclusively available on Nintendo Switch. While there is no news of a release on other platforms like PlayStation or Xbox, it’s worth noting that previous entries, such as Pikmin 3, made their way from Wii U to Nintendo Switch. So, there may be a possibility of a future release on Nintendo’s next console.

The initial reveal trailer for Pikmin 4 showcased its stunning art style and environment, giving fans a glimpse of what to expect. Although it didn’t provide many details, the colorful visuals characteristic of the series were clearly present. A second Direct trailer delved deeper into the game, introducing exciting new features.

In Pikmin 4, players can look forward to a new type of Pikmin that possesses the power to freeze water, allowing safe passage for all Pikmin. However, the most captivating addition is the introduction of an adorable dog-like companion who will assist Captain Olimar. This faithful companion can perform tasks such as dragging items back to Olimar’s ship and even breaking through obstacles to uncover new areas. With these new elements, Pikmin 4 aims to set itself apart from its predecessors.

Pikmin’s gameplay combines real-time strategy, puzzles, and time-based mechanics. As a space traveler, you’ll command Pikmin as they explore various planets and face off against dangerous creatures. Each Pikmin type has unique abilities, such as the Rock Pikmin’s ability to break walls and structures effortlessly.

Pikmin 4 expands on this formula by introducing the ice Pikmin type and the dog companion, Oatchi. Nintendo promises players the ability to experience the game from the perspective of Pikmin, a first for the series. It remains to be seen whether this will be a separate mode or a toggleable feature.

Additionally, Oatchi offers new gameplay possibilities. Apart from fighting alongside you, Oatchi will unlock and upgrade new abilities, such as swimming and breaking through obstacles. The introduction of the Glow Pikmin also brings a new experience, as these Pikmin only emerge at night and can join forces to attack flying enemies.

Furthermore, Pikmin 4 includes Dandori Battles, allowing players to compete against each other to gather the most objects within a time limit and save castaways.

Pikmin 4 is now available for preorder both at major retailers and through the Nintendo eShop. The game is priced at $60 and qualifies for Nintendo’s Switch Game Voucher system.
