PlayStation Discontinues Selling Digital Codes at Physical Stores

Sony’s Shift in Strategy

Sony, the mastermind behind PlayStation, has made a significant decision regarding the distribution of digital codes for their gaming platform. Rather than offering these codes at physical retail stores, Sony has opted to cease this practice. This move comes as part of their strategy to adapt to the changing landscape of the gaming industry.

A New State of Play Showcase

Sony regularly treats its fanbase to showcases that unveil upcoming titles for PlayStation platforms. While gamers were eagerly anticipating a full-fledged PlayStation Showcase this month, Sony surprised them by organizing another State of Play event on September 13, just before the Tokyo Game Show. The event aimed to provide a glimpse into the exciting games coming to PS4, PS5, and PlayStation VR2.

Worth the Watch

The September 2022 State of Play may not have been as grandiose as previous presentations, lasting only 20 minutes and showcasing 10 games. Nevertheless, each title featured was incredibly intriguing in its own right. Notably, fans were treated to a sneak peek of the highly anticipated next installment in the Tekken series and a thrilling trailer for God of War: Ragnarok, scheduled for release in November.

Tekken 8 Unveiled

The show commenced with the announcement of Tekken 8. Viewers were treated to captivating cutscenes and gameplay footage featuring characters like Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima. This peek into the game’s story mode, running at a smooth 50 frames per second, left fans eagerly awaiting its release on the next-gen console, PS5.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! Makes its Way West

Coming as a pleasant surprise to fans, the beloved game Like a Dragon: Ishin! is receiving a full remake treatment. Originally released for PS3 and PS4 in the early 2010s, this Yakuza series spin-off never made its way to North America or Europe due to the series’ lack of popularity at the time. Now, under the title Like a Dragon: Ishin!, the game has been remade using Unreal Engine 4 and is set to grace both PS4 and PS5 consoles in February 2023.

God of War: Ragnarok Showcased

As a fitting conclusion to the State of Play event, Sony unveiled a limited-edition DualSense wireless controller inspired by the upcoming God of War game. Scheduled for release on November 8, this accessory offers fans a unique way to immerse themselves in the world of Kratos. Furthermore, attendees were treated to an in-depth look at God of War: Ragnarok, showcasing thrilling interactions between Kratos, Tyr, and Atreus, as well as awe-inspiring gameplay elements. Mark your calendars, as God of War: Ragnarok is set to launch on November 9.

Other Exciting Announcements

In addition to the major highlights, the State of Play event showcased other noteworthy announcements. PlayStation VR2 owners can look forward to experiencing Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Enhanced Edition and Demeo. Hogwarts Legacy, the highly anticipated Harry Potter game, will feature an exclusive quest for PlayStation gamers. Moreover, Ironwood Studio’s debut game, Pacific Drive, was announced, promising an exciting gaming experience. Sony also shed light on PlayStation Stars, an upcoming feature that will roll out in different regions later this month. Bandai Namco contributed to the excitement by unveiling a new mecha game called Synduality. Finally, PlayStation enthusiasts can anticipate the release of Stellar Blade, previously known as Project EVE, which Sony Interactive Entertainment will publish in 2023. Additionally, Koei Tecmo Games’ Team Ninja is developing Rise of the Ronin exclusively for PS5, scheduled for release in 2024.

This latest State of Play event was a testament to Sony’s commitment to delivering exceptional gaming experiences to PlayStation fans. Stay tuned for more updates and releases from OnSpec Electronic, Inc. as they continue to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment.
