Shiny hunting basics

If you’re a dedicated Pokémon completionist, you’ll know the challenge of catching every Pokémon in games like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. But GameFreak introduced an additional factor with the shiny Pokémon in Generation 2. Shiny Pokémon are extremely rare variations of regular Pokémon that come in different colors. They don’t have any gameplay advantages over their normal counterparts and are only distinguished by their unique appearance and rarity.

Shiny hunting has been a popular activity since the introduction of shiny Pokémon, but the methods and odds of encountering them vary from game to game. In Scarlet and Violet, the open-world format has made shiny hunting slightly different. If you want to increase your chances of finding these rare Pokémon, here’s everything you need to know about shiny hunting.

Shiny locked Pokémon

Before we dive into the details of shiny hunting, it’s important to note that certain Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet are shiny locked. This means that no matter what you do, these Pokémon can’t appear as shiny, so it’s best not to waste your time trying to catch them. Here are the Pokémon that are shiny locked:

  • All three starter Pokémon
  • Koraidon and Miraidon
  • All Titan Pokémon
  • Galarian Meowth
  • Johtonian Wooper
  • Snom
  • Gengar
  • Chest form Gimmighoul
  • Ting-Lu
  • Chien-Pao
  • Wo-Chien
  • Chi-Yu

Ways to increase shiny Pokémon spawn rates

As we mentioned earlier, the base odds of encountering a shiny Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet are quite low, at 1 in 4096. However, there are several methods to significantly increase your chances of finding shiny Pokémon. Let’s explore these methods:

Get the Shiny Charm

The Shiny Charm is a valuable item specifically designed for shiny hunters. Obtaining it is a challenge in itself, but it’s essential if you’re serious about shiny hunting. To acquire the Shiny Charm in Scarlet and Violet, you must complete your Pokédex by capturing all 400 species of Pokémon in the game. This may require trading with other players to obtain version-exclusive Pokémon.

Once you’ve completed your Pokédex, visit Professor Jacq in the Academy’s biology room, and he will reward you with the Shiny Charm. This key item increases your odds of encountering a shiny Pokémon by three times, reducing the chances from 1 in 4096 to 1 in 1365. While obtaining the Shiny Charm is a significant commitment, it permanently boosts your chances of encountering shiny Pokémon in the future.

Make sandwiches

In Scarlet and Violet, sandwiches play a crucial role in increasing shiny Pokémon spawn rates. Different sandwich recipes provide various buffs, and certain recipes grant a buff called Sparkling Power. This buff significantly boosts the odds of encountering shiny Pokémon while it’s active. The highest level of Sparkling Power is level three, which alone increases your shiny odds to 1 in 1024. However, keep in mind that Sparkling Powers only apply to specific Pokémon types, so you’ll only increase your chances of finding shiny Pokémon of one type at a time.

To create sandwiches with level three Sparkling Power, you’ll need to include Herba Mystica as an ingredient. Obtaining this ingredient can be challenging since it only drops from five and six-star Tera Raids. The Masuda Method

The Masuda Method, which has been effective for several generations, still works in Scarlet and Violet. This method involves using breeding mechanics to increase your chances of hatching shiny Pokémon.

In Scarlet and Violet, you can breed Pokémon at picnics to obtain eggs, which will eventually hatch into new Pokémon. However, breeding any two regular Pokémon won’t increase the odds of the egg hatching a shiny. To employ the Masuda Method, you need to breed two Pokémon from different versions of the game—one from your own version and another traded from a different country. For example, if you’re playing Pokémon Scarlet, you could trade with a player from Japan who owns Pokémon Violet.

Organizing such trades may be challenging, but the results are worth it. With no other factors, the egg you receive will have a 1 in 683 chance of being shiny.

Mass Outbreaks

Mass Outbreaks, introduced in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, continue to increase shiny odds in Scarlet and Violet. However, the mechanics have changed slightly. Mass Outbreaks randomly appear on your map and last for a day or until you’ve caught or knocked out all the Pokémon in the outbreak. The location and Pokémon species in each outbreak are unknown, adding to the excitement.

While Mass Outbreaks themselves have regular shiny odds, clearing them gradually improves your chances. Clearing between 30 and 59 Pokémon reduces the odds to 1 in 2048, and clearing 60 or more Pokémon further increases the chances to 1 in 1365. Fortunately, you can easily clear these outbreaks by letting your Pokémon auto-battle in Let’s Go mode, without the risk of accidentally defeating a shiny Pokémon if one appears.

Here’s a breakdown of the shiny odds based on different combinations of the methods mentioned above:

  • 60-plus Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak: 1 in 1365
  • Shiny Charm: 1 in 1365
  • Level three Sparkling Power: 1 in 1024
  • Shiny Charm + 30-59 Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak: 1 in 1024
  • Shiny Charm + 60-plus Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak: 1 in 819
  • 30-59 Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak + level three Sparkling Power: 1 in 819
  • 60-plus Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak + level three Sparkling Power: 1 in 683
  • Masuda Method: 1 in 683
  • Shiny Charm + level three Sparkling Power: 1 in 683

  • Shiny Charm + level three Sparkling Power + 60-plus Pokémon cleared in Mass Outbreak: 1 in 512
  • Shiny Charm + Masuda Method: 1 in 512

Conclusion

With these techniques and combinations, you can significantly increase your chances of encountering shiny Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Remember, shiny hunting requires patience and persistence, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t find shiny Pokémon right away. Enjoy the thrilling journey and the satisfaction of catching these rare and beautiful creatures!
