The Silent Hill 2 remake was announced as an exclusive for the current generation and a console exclusive for the PlayStation 5. PC players will also have the opportunity to experience the game at launch, whenever that may be. However, Xbox players will have to wait until the exclusivity deal expires, which could range from six months to a year.
Trailers
The announcement trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake is technically a teaser, as it doesn’t feature any in-game footage. Nevertheless, it offers a chilling glimpse into the eerie town of Silent Hill.
The trailer begins in a familiar, dingy bathroom, but this time James appears more distraught. He gazes at himself in the mirror while questioning if Mary could really be waiting for him, knowing that she succumbed to “that damn disease three years ago.”
As James ventures outside, we catch glimpses of the town map near a diner and him wandering down a street, accompanied by Mary’s voice reciting the iconic line, “In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill.”
The trailer showcases scenes of James encountering Pyramid Head in an apartment, seeing Laura outside a hospital, and even late-game moments involving a noose. There’s a brief cutscene of James attacking a nurse, hinting at additional scenes like this.
Before the title drops, we witness James meeting Maria and Pyramid Head emerging from the rain.
Further information was revealed in a PlayStation Blog post featuring Konami producer Motoi Okamoto and the creative director and lead designer at Bloober Team. They mentioned that Masahiro Ito and Akira Yamaoka, the original creature designer and composer, respectively, will be part of the development team. With two members from the original Team Silent involved, many fans can rest assured that the remake will maintain the essence that made the original game a horror masterpiece.
The primary goal of the Silent Hill 2 remake, according to Bloober Team, is to preserve the exceptional atmosphere of the original game while modernizing various aspects of gameplay. Although they haven’t explicitly addressed potential changes to the story, fans are eager to see if any significant alterations are in store.
Gameplay

The trailer doesn’t showcase any gameplay, but the accompanying blog post sheds light on the team’s intention to modernize Silent Hill 2.
The original Silent Hill 2 employed a semi-fixed camera that dynamically tracked and panned as you moved through the environments. While you had some control, it primarily framed the scenes in a specific manner.
In the remake, the team has opted for a more traditional third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective, similar to the shift in Resident Evil 2 Remake from the fixed cameras of the original. This change aims to enhance immersion and make the game more visceral, bringing about a new combat system.
The original game featured a clunky melee combat system, possibly intentionally so, alongside basic gunplay. We don’t have specific details about mechanical changes, but the team intends to utilize the new perspective and combat system to reconstruct set pieces and enhance player immersion.
The Silent Hill 2 remake will run on Unreal Engine 5, utilizing features such as Lumen and Nanite. Lumen provides dynamic illumination, allowing for more natural lighting and realistic interaction between light and the environment. Nanite, on the other hand, enables the creation of highly detailed environments and levels.
As a console exclusive for PS5, the game will also take advantage of specific hardware features. The immersive experience in the titular town will be enhanced through 3D audio. Additionally, the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will be utilized for a more immersive experience.
Multiplayer
Staying true to the original, the Silent Hill 2 remake will remain a solitary, eerie, and foreboding experience that can only be tackled alone.
Pre-order
The Silent Hill 2 remake is still a long way off, and pre-order information is yet to be released. We will keep you updated with all the details as soon as it becomes available.
