Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring: A Comprehensive Guide

Elden Ring, the highly anticipated game from FromSoft, has delighted fans by incorporating the best features from the Souls series and introducing exciting new additions. Among these new features, the Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring stand out as powerful tools in battle. However, many players are unsure of where to find more Spirit Ashes and how to upgrade them. This guide will provide all the information you need to enhance your understanding of Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring.

What are Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring?

Spirit Ashes are companions that can be summoned into your world using the Spirit Calling Bell. Unlike multiplayer and NPC summons, Spirit Ashes provide valuable assistance during your adventures. If you’re unfamiliar with the Spirit Calling Bell, you may have overlooked an essential NPC.

To obtain the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring, head to the Church of Ellah Site of Grace and rest. From there, continue until you reach the Gatefront Site of Grace, where you’ll encounter Melina. She will give you a ring that allows you to summon your horse, Torrent. Return to the Church of Ellah, take a look at the merchant, and turn around. You’ll meet Renna, a witch who will provide you with the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes.

In case you missed Renna, you can purchase the Spirit Calling Bell from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. These are the main sources of Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring. However, numerous Spirit Ashes can be found in various dungeons across the Lands Between.

Where to Find Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring

Unlike items that can be purchased from merchants, most Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring are obtained through exploration. Some are obtained as part of the main story, such as the Lone Wolf Ashes, which are unlocked early on when you first meet Renna. However, others require more effort and prerequisite steps to discover.

For example, the Mimic Tear Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring are highly regarded as one of the best summons available. These ashes allow you to summon a clone of yourself, which can serve as a durable companion after being upgraded. It’s worth noting that the Mimic Tear Ashes consume a significant amount of HP instead of FP. If you’re willing to spend a Crimson Tears Flask to create a clone of yourself, this summon is highly recommended.

However, the Mimic Tear Spirit Ashes are located in Norkon, the Eternal City, a unique area in the Siofra River. To access this section of the game, you must defeat the Starscourge Radhan.

Now, let’s explore some of the best Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring.

The Ancestral Follower

To acquire the Ancestral Follower Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring, you must gain access to the secret underground area known as the Siofra River. If you haven’t discovered this area yet, head to the eastern shore of Limgrave. The entrance to the Siofra River can be found directly north of the Fort Haight West Site of Grace, above the Minor Erdtree.

Once inside the Siofra River, progress until you reach a lift. Ride the lift and continue until you find the Siofra River Bank Site of Grace. This is where your quest for the Ancestral Follower Spirit Ashes begins.

Start by lighting eight fires spread throughout the area. As each fire is lit, pillars on the staircase in front of the River Bank Site of Grace will ignite. When all eight fires are lit, a message will appear, indicating that something new is available. Warp back to the River Bank to replenish your flasks, and then head up the stairs. The locations of all the fire spots can be found on the maps provided.

Interact with the stag skeleton at the top of the stairs, and you’ll be transported to a new area. Enter the fog wall to face the Ancestor Spirit boss. This formidable stag can be challenging to hit with melee weapons, so it’s advisable to use magic or ranged weapons. With the assistance of Latenna the Albinauric and her Spirit Ashes, you should be able to defeat the boss easily. Once victorious, the Ancestral Follower Spirit Ashes will become yours.

Latenna the Albinauric

Latenna the Albinauric is an NPC you’ll encounter during the Grand Lift of Rold sidequest. Head to the Village of the Albinaurics, located southwest of the Academy. As you ride up the hill, defeat the fire mage and look for large pottery against the cliffside. You’ll also notice several messages on the ground. Attack the pottery to reveal a cloaked NPC hiding behind it. There is an image below indicating the NPC’s hiding spot.

The NPC will give you half of the Haligtree Secret Medallion required to operate the Grand Lift of Rold. In return, they task you with finding the other half, similar to the Grand Lift of Dectus questline.

Warp back to Roundtable Hold and prepare to face Ensha of the Royal Remains, who will attack you. Defeat Ensha, and after a loading screen, the normal Roundtable Hold will reappear, along with the Royal Remains armor. This armor gradually restores your HP while wearing it.

Speak with Gideon to learn about an Albinauric woman hiding in the Lakeside Crystal Cave, west of the Laskyar Ruins. Detailed directions and the exact location can be found in the provided image.

Fight your way through the cave and defeat the dungeon boss, a Bloodhound Knight. After exiting the cave, you’ll discover the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack. Speak with Latenna and present her with the medallion. This will continue the Grand Lift of Rold questline and unlock the Latenna the Albinauric Spirit Ashes.

The Greatshield Soldier

The Greatshield Soldier Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring serve a specific purpose. While some spirits excel in dealing damage during boss fights, the Greatshield Soldiers act as distractions, diverting the attention of bosses while you heal or attack from behind. These Ashes are ideal for players who prefer a more defensive playstyle.

To acquire the Greatshield Soldier Spirit Ashes, you must venture to Nokron, the Eternal City. This area becomes accessible after defeating the Starscourge Radhan (minor spoilers ahead).

Upon defeating Radhan, you’ll witness a meteor crashing down from the sky in a specific location within the Lands Between. Warp to the Fort Haight West Site of Grace and look to your left. Floating debris from the impact will be visible. Ride around to the right side of the crater and begin descending carefully. Be cautious, as a misstep can result in a fatal fall.

Continue until you reach the Nokron, Eternal City Site of Grace. The path forward is relatively straightforward, so getting lost shouldn’t be an issue. From the Eternal City Site of Grace, head toward the gazebo and bear right. You’ll come across two graveyards, one on the left and one on the right. The Greatshield Soldier Spirit Ashes can be found on a corpse in the cemetery on the right.

Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff

Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff is a highly sought-after set of Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring. These Ashes require 108 FP to cast, which is more than the base FP you start the game with. However, the investment is well worth it, as Kristoff proves to be a formidable companion. Please note that this summon requires 22 Mind.

You’ll find the Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff Spirit Ashes in the Sainted Hero’s Grave, a dungeon located west of Lyndell, the Capital City. Travel west from the Rampartside Path Site of Grace until you encounter lightning striking down from the sky. The dungeon itself is situated on a high cliff and cannot be accessed from the road below, such as the Atlus Highway Junction starting point. Refer to the provided image for a precise location.

Upon arrival, you’ll face a boss, the Black Knife Assassin, who guards the entrance. Summon your trusty spirits, such as the Greatshield Soldiers, and strike when the assassin is vulnerable. Once defeated, you’ll gain entrance to the dungeon.

Rest at the Site of Grace and proceed forward. You’ll encounter an in-game message that says, “Shadow bathes in light and knows weakness.” Remember this message for later. Before turning left, approach the illusionary wall in front of you and attack it. Behind the wall, you’ll find the Crimson Seed Talisman, guarded by a relatively easy enemy. This Talisman increases the amount of HP healed by your flasks.

Proceed into the dungeon and encounter shadowed enemies. Lure them into the bright light emitting from the walls, which allows you to attack them. This source of light is unmistakable once you see it. Keep fighting until you reach a room with an unstable-looking floor. Be cautious; it’s indeed unstable. However, before testing its stability, explore the back of the room for a bonus set of Spirit Ashes, the Lyndell Soldier Ashes.

Break through the floor and defeat the shadow gargoyles below. There are four of them, so proceed with caution. Using a shield is highly effective, as you can deflect their attacks and strike while they’re staggered. Pull the lever to open the doors in front of you. This action triggers a series of guillotines that requires careful navigation.

Avoid the falling blades until you find a ladder tucked into the wall at the far end of this section. The ladder is located just before the locked door and shortly after the enemy on horseback spawns. Climb the ladder and drop down on the other side. Defeat the enemy that appears, being mindful of the poison, and continue moving forward. Eventually, you’ll encounter a shadowed minotaur enemy, similar to those found in Lyndell City. Get its attention and lure it back to the area where you previously fell through the floor by jumping off the bridge to the right as you exit the room.

Once defeated, a message will appear, indicating that a heavy door has opened somewhere. Return through the guillotine gauntlet and pass through the now-opened door. You’ll arrive at the Stake of Marika and a fog wall. Behind the fog wall awaits the boss, the Ancient Hero of Zamor. This boss may remind you of the Dancer from Dark Souls 3 but is not as challenging. Avoid the frost damage and defeat the boss to claim the Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff Spirit Ashes.

Omenkiller Rollo

Omenkiller Rollo is an essential Spirit Ashes that becomes available toward the later stages of the game. However, unlocking these Ashes requires meeting specific prerequisites:

  • Gain access to the Grand Lift of Dectus.
  • Defeat at least two demi-gods to enter Lyndell, the Capital City.
  • Survive the trials of Lyndell and defeat Morgott, the Omen King.

Once you’ve fulfilled these requirements, you can set your sights on obtaining the Omenkiller Rollo Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring.

After defeating Morgott, warp to the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace. Head up the stairs, turn left, and proceed without stopping. Open the door at the end, if you haven’t already, and ascend the stairs ahead. Ignore or defeat the enemies encountered along the way. Once on the upper level, look for an entrance on the left side of the wall.

Take the lift up and continue forward. Engage or evade the enemies ahead at your discretion. Run through the door that was previously closed if you’ve been in that area before and avoid or defeat the enemy on horseback. Although it may be challenging, utilizing the debris on the road can impede his pursuit.

From this point, you have two options: you can proceed to a boss fight by turning right, or you can ride the lift down to find a Site of Grace. It is recommended to ride the lift down, as it shortens the distance you need to traverse if you die during the boss fight.

Ride the lift back up and head across the south-facing bridge. Keep going until your screen turns black and the boss fight begins. Prepare to face the Fell Twins, two brothers armed with deadly weapons. It is highly advisable to summon Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff for this battle. His strength will help divert one brother’s attention while you engage the other. Two-handed weapons are effective in interrupting their attacks, but exercise caution to avoid getting overwhelmed. A +6 Bloodhound’s Fang, for example, combined with the Bloodhound’s Finesse Ashes of War, proved successful in defeating them swiftly.

Once you have emerged victorious, you will obtain the Omenkiller Rollo Spirit Ashes. Like Kristoff, Rollo is a legendary summon that requires 113 FP. If you are capable of summoning Kristoff, you should be able to summon Rollo with only one additional Mind stat point. In case you are a few FP short, equip the Cerulean Amber Medallion to temporarily boost your FP before summoning Rollo.

Lhutel the Headless

You may be kicking yourself if you missed the opportunity to acquire the Lhutel the Headless Spirit Ashes early in the game. Lhutel is an exceptional companion, despite the absence of a head. With her trusty greatshield, she can tank enemy attacks effectively. Here’s how to obtain the Lhutel the Headless Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring.

Make your way to the Weeping Peninsula and search for the Tombsward Catacombs, located north of the Minor Erdtree. Refer to the provided image for the precise location.

Once inside the catacombs, you have the option to use a stonesword key to clear the fog wall ahead and enter a cookbook area, but this decision is entirely up to you. Proceed through the dungeon, either fighting or evading the skeletons you encounter, until you face a fire-breathing gargoyle contraption.

When the gargoyle stops breathing fire, run toward it and roll into the small inlet on the right side to avoid getting burned. When it stops again, run toward it and attack the contraption to lower it. Jump on top and strike it again to use it as a lift. Continue through the dungeon until you find a lever that opens the large doors at the entrance.

Return to the Site of Grace, rest to de-aggro the skeletons, and then proceed to the boss fight. You’ll face another Cemetery Shade, a common boss found in the catacombs throughout the Lands Between. This shade can be challenging to control, as it moves unpredictably. However, with a powerful companion like Omenkiller Rollo or Ancient Dragon Knight Kristoff, victory is well within reach. Once defeated, you’ll obtain the Lhutel the Headless Spirit Ashes.

Like Rollo and Kristoff, Lhutel is a legendary spirit summon. She requires 104 FP, so if you encounter her early in the game, you may need to wait until you have accumulated enough FP.

When Can You Use Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring?

Knowing when you can summon your spirits can sometimes be frustrating due to inconsistent availability. Although you can always summon spirits during boss fights, summoning them in the overworld is occasionally more restrictive. So, when exactly can you use Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring?

You can typically summon Spirit Ashes when entering a boss fight. However, outside of boss fights, you must be near a rebirth monument, also known as a Stake of Marika, to summon your spirits.

You’ll know when you can summon your spirits by the appearance of a blue archway icon above your equipment. This icon is displayed in the image above, positioned over the Contagious Fury ability attached to the Jellyfish Shield. When you see this blue icon, it means you can summon your spirits. Furthermore, it indicates that a Stake of Marika is nearby, which serves as a spawn point if you die. Once you leave the area, the blue archway icon disappears, along with your summoned spirits.

Confusion exists regarding how many times you can summon spirits. Some players believe that you can only summon them once per life, requiring a rest at a Site of Grace to summon them again. However, this is not accurate. In Elden Ring, you can summon spirits once per opportunity. Once your spirits perish, you depart from the summoning area, or you send them away, summoning them again is no longer possible. However, if you encounter another summoning area, you can summon your spirits once more. As long as you have enough charges in your Flask of Cerulean Tears, you can summon spirits multiple times without resting or dying, provided you’re in a new summoning area.

A straightforward area to test this mechanic is near the Gatefront Site of Grace. On one side of the gate, you’ll encounter a camp of enemies. On the other side, a treacherous road awaits, filled with archers and giants leading to Stormveil Castle. You can summon your spirits on both sides of the gate, but they vanish once you pass through. This behavior is evident in the accompanying video.

After summoning our spirits on both sides of the gate, the blue archway icon disappeared, indicating that we could no longer summon spirits. However, once we reached Stormveil Castle, the blue icon reappeared, allowing us to call our wolves for the third time without resting.

Keep in mind that you cannot summon spirits when playing co-op or joining another player’s world.

How to Upgrade Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring

To enhance your Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring, seek out Roderika in Roundtable Hold. Roderika is a Spirit Tuner and possesses the innate ability to strengthen your Spirit Ashes. However, upgrading is not immediately possible.

When you first encounter Roderika in Roundtable Hold, she won’t divulge much information. Exhaust all dialogue options, then visit the blacksmith. Inquire about Roderika, despite the blacksmith’s initial reluctance. Eventually, he will agree to take her under his wing. Continue exhausting all dialogue options, and then leave Roundtable Hold. Upon your return, you’ll find Roderika across from her biggest fan, near the blacksmith. Speak with her to upgrade your Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring.

To carry out the upgrades, you’ll need Grave Gloveworts for normal Spirit Ashes and Ghost Gloveworts for renowned Spirit Ashes. Both types of flowers can be found in the Catacombs scattered throughout the Lands Between.

Mastering the art of Spirit Ashes in Elden Ring is a rewarding endeavor. These powerful companions will aid you in battle and enhance your overall gaming experience. By following this comprehensive guide, you now know where to find various Spirit Ashes, how to use them effectively, and the mechanics governing their summoning. Strengthen your Spirit Ashes and unleash their full potential as you explore the vast and treacherous world of Elden Ring.
