The highly anticipated release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has gamers bracing themselves for an epic adventure. Known for its vast world and engrossing gameplay, Breath of the Wild was a massive hit among completionists. Now, its sequel promises an even bigger and more ambitious experience, offering countless hours of exploration in the kingdom of Hyrule.

The burning question on everyone’s mind is: how much time will Tears of the Kingdom consume? While the answer depends on individual playstyles, we have some insightful data from our own playthrough that should give you a rough estimate of the game’s scale.

In comparison to its predecessor, Tears of the Kingdom is a grander and lengthier game. It boasts a greater number of main story missions and introduces two new expansive areas to explore. According to How Long to Beat, completing the main story of Breath of the Wild can take anywhere from 28 to 50 hours. With that in mind, it’s safe to assume that Tears of the Kingdom will require a bit more time investment.

During our playthrough, we reached the end credits after a solid 60 hours of gameplay. Keep in mind that this duration included roughly around 100 shrine completions and only a handful of initial side-quests. While it’s possible to rush through the game much faster, it’s worth noting that the final boss battle is particularly challenging. To prepare for it, it’s advisable to acquire as many hearts as possible. Rushing may not be the best strategy. Additionally, skipping certain story quests will impact the difficulty of the final stretch.

If you’re aiming for a comprehensive experience, the adventure can easily stretch well beyond 100 hours. Completing every shrine and illuminating each lightroot in the underground area will likely require closer to 100 hours of gameplay.

Predicting the length of a full 100% completion is tricky due to the sheer number of side-quests available, additional exploration in the underground, and the ever-popular Korok seed hunt. How Long to Beat suggests that Breath of the Wild can take up to 194 hours to fully complete, and we anticipate Tears of the Kingdom surpassing that figure. So, if you’re truly dedicated to exploring every nook and cranny of Hyrule, be prepared to invest at least 200 hours.

While it’s challenging to provide precise time estimates for a game that offers such freedom, there are some more concrete metrics to consider. Here’s a breakdown of the various quest types you’ll encounter in Tears of the Kingdom:

  • Main quests: 23
  • Side adventures: 60
  • Shrine quests: 31
  • Side-quests: 139

Comparing these numbers with those of Breath of the Wild, which had 15 main quests and 76 side quests, the difference is staggering. In total, Breath of the Wild featured 133 quests, while Tears of the Kingdom offers a staggering 225. This vast quantity of content helps explain the game’s higher price tag of $70.

So, don’t expect to breeze through Tears of the Kingdom in a single weekend or complete its story in a few short sittings. To truly immerse yourself in this epic adventure, set aside at least a month of dedicated playtime. Realistically, you’ll find yourself gradually chipping away at it throughout the year.
