Discovering the Grappling Hook’s Potential

The grappling hook was undoubtedly the standout feature of the original Dying Light. In the sequel, Dying Light 2, it returns with a few alterations to its functionality. However, don’t waste your time searching for it in the early stages of the game, as unlocking the grappling hook will take some time. Here’s how you can unlock the grappling hook in Dying Light 2, upgrade it, and understand its differences from its predecessor.

How to Obtain the Grappling Hook in Dying Light 2

To gain access to the grappling hook in Dying Light 2, you’ll have to progress through the game.

Step 1: Embark on the “Broadcast” mission by meeting Jack and Juan at the Fish Eye. Lawan may try to dissuade you, but it’s best to stick to your guns. Regardless, you’ll eventually acquire the grappling hook.

Step 2: Proceed with the mission until you find yourself in an elevator with Rowe and his crew. Survive the onslaught of explosive zombies until Lawan is able to reach Frank. To make dealing with the explosive zombies easier, it’s recommended to have a good supply of throwing knives. If you run out, you can resort to using bottles as alternatives.

Step 3: After Frank regains his composure, enter the elevator shaft where you’ll discover the grappling hook embedded in the wall.

Step 4: Under the inventory tab, equip the grappling hook as one of Aiden’s accessories. Aim at a surface with crosshairs and use the Left Trigger to throw the grappling hook. Aiden will latch onto the surface and swing across gaps, utilizing it as an anchor point.

Once obtained, the grappling hook will become a permanent addition to Aiden’s arsenal. It’s unlikely you’ll ever want to be without it, which means you’ll have three accessory slots available moving forward. These slots can accommodate throwable weapons such as knives, DIY grenades, and the UV flashlight.

How Does the Grappling Hook Differ in Dying Light 2?

The grappling hook in Dying Light 2 differs significantly from its predecessor. First and foremost, Aiden’s grappling hook doesn’t pull him towards the targeted object as Crane’s did. Instead, Aiden’s grappling hook operates similarly to Spider-Man, whereas Crane’s version functioned more like Batman. However, after upgrading Aiden’s grappling hook, it becomes more akin to Crane’s.

Enhancing the Grappling Hook in Dying Light 2

To maximize the potential of your grappling hook in Dying Light 2, you can visit any craftmaster to upgrade it. Here are the resources required for each upgrade:

  • Two military tech and 2,000 old-world money: This upgrade provides additional velocity when attaching to surfaces.
  • Three military tech and 3,000 old-world money: This upgrade allows you to pull enemies closer to you.

Old-world money is relatively easy to come by, so you likely have a few thousand dollars already. However, military tech is a rarer resource. Look for military airdrops marked by parachutes on your compass to locate them around Villedor. Scan the area using binoculars from a high vantage point to identify these airdrops, which are often positioned on tall buildings with large parachutes attached to them.

The upgrade that allows you to pull enemies closer proves more effective between the two options. When enemies are pulled closer, they stumble, allowing you to utilize the Head Stomp combat skill if you’ve acquired it. While increased velocity is advantageous, it doesn’t provide greater coverage compared to a long jump or the Dart and Dash parkour skills. Unfortunately, you must purchase the velocity upgrade before being able to choose the one that enables pulling enemies closer.
