What Power Supply Do You Need for the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080?

Although there were rumors about the RTX 4090 consuming an excessive amount of power, it turns out it’s not as bad as expected. According to our RTX 4090 review (read here), it has a rated power of 450 watts, which is the same as the RTX 3090 Ti. However, you may still need a new power supply. So, let’s go over the power supplies you should consider if you’re planning to get an RTX 4090 or RTX 4080.

What Power Supply Do You Need for the RTX 4090?

The Seasonic GX-850.

Nvidia recommends an 850-watt PSU for its Founder’s Edition (FE) 4090. Many third-party models with the same clock speed as the FE model also recommend the same power range. One good option is Seasonic’s GX-850. It’s fully modular, has an 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating, and comes with plenty of accessories like velcro ties, zip ties, and a PSU tester. Although it’s a bit pricey at around $160, Seasonic is known for its quality power supplies, and you wouldn’t want to pair a 4090 with something that might break.

Some RTX 4090 models require more power, especially if they have higher clock speeds than the Founder’s Edition. In such cases, you could consider EVGA’s 1000-watt SuperNOVA 1000 P5 PSU. It’s similar to Seasonic’s GX-850 in terms of accessories, but it provides an extra 150 watts and boasts an 80 Plus Platinum efficiency rating. At the time of writing, it’s priced between $170 and $195, depending on where you make your purchase.

If you’re planning to pair a premium RTX 4090 with a high-end CPU like the Ryzen 9 7950X or Core i9-13900K, it’s a good idea to go for something like Corsair’s HX1200. It’s a 1200W PSU with an 80 Plus Platinum rating. It’s fully modular and comes with similar accessories to the lower-power Seasonic and EVGA PSUs. You can find it for around $230 to $250. Although there are power supplies that can deliver even higher wattages, 1,200 watts should be sufficient for even the most powerful PCs available today.

What Power Supply Do You Need for the RTX 4080?

Before we discuss power supply recommendations for the RTX 4080, it’s important to note that the RTX 4080 16GB and the RTX 4080 12GB, despite their names, are very different GPUs. The 12GB model has less memory, fewer cores, and consequently draws less power. The recommendations below are for the 16GB model, but they will work for the 12GB model as well, although they might be slightly overkill.

If you’re considering an RTX 4080 16GB, you should look into Seasonic’s 750-watt GX-750. It meets the power requirement for the RTX 4080 16GB and is similar to the GX-850, but with 100 watts less power. There is a cheaper semi-modular version available, but if you’re buying a 4080, you probably don’t want to compromise on cable management for a few bucks.

If you need a higher-wattage power supply for a third-party RTX 4080, you could refer to our recommended PSUs for the RTX 4090 since there isn’t anything special about needing more power. However, we can also suggest some alternative choices. The Corsair RM850x is an 850-watt PSU with an 80 Plus Gold rating. It’s fully modular and offers a reliable option for your RTX 4080.

If you’re planning to build a PC with a high-power RTX 4080 16GB and a high-end CPU, consider EVGA’s SuperNOVA 1000 GT. It delivers 1,000 watts just like the previously recommended SuperNOVA 1000 P5 for the RTX 4090, but it has a Gold rating instead of Platinum. The difference in efficiency shouldn’t be a huge concern, as the efficiency is higher at lower power consumption levels, and the RTX 4080 consumes less power compared to the RTX 4090.

The power requirements for the RTX 40-series are higher than usual. While the RTX 3090 had a power requirement of 350 watts, the RTX 4090 and 3090 Ti demand 450 watts. Therefore, if you want Nvidia’s new flagship GPU, it’s essential to have a good power supply that can handle the load.

Regarding the RTX 4080, both the 12GB and 16GB models have relatively moderate power consumption, with 285 watts and 320 watts, respectively. Please note that these cards are not yet available, and while Nvidia has provided their power draw, it’s possible that third-party cards will require a larger power supply.
